I work for a CPA firm, 45-50 employees, and we're looking at expanding our benefits package. Right now, we only offer 2 or 3 weeks vacation, 1 week paid sick time, healthcare, 401(k) with profit sharing, and Life/Long-term disability coverage. No dental, no parental leave, no ST disability, no EAP etc.

When you're leaving your firm in a few months, but haven't yet given notice, how hard do you fight to keep your hours up? I'm not looking to coast, just wondering how worried I should be if I slip below 160 hours this month and if it's normal to slow down on hours when you know your departure is imminent.

Any firms doing anything innovative with the billable hour yet? Non-billable hour pilots? I’ve heard of a few but not recently, so were they flops? Suggestions for what could actually work?

What do you do if the partner who hired you is nice in social settings but awful to work for? And you can’t seem to escape from working for that partner. This partner doesn’t respond to your emails for critical issues that you need input on, doesn’t return your phone calls and voicemails and throws you under the bus in front of the client to blame you for her mistakes. The seniors are too busy. Just joined this firm so lateraling isn’t a viable option.

I’m currently a third year in my small firm’s life sciences team. I’m not really stimulated by the work and although they say they have a lot of work, they’re not good at managing workload. Is your firm treating 12/26 and 12/27 as firm holiday since the 24th and the 25th are during the weekend this year? Of course client demands would dictate whether people will be working, but curious what the official policy is. For what it’s worth, my firm treated the day after thanksgiving as holiday and I didn’t have to work for the whole day.
