First news I read today was more than 50% of first line responders and emergency workers, etc are straight up refusing to take the vaccine!

(Former first responder here) I've seen these reports too, and I don't believe them. They don't systematically poll first responders. I think they just inferred it from who quickly they signed up. I'm still a volunteer paramedic and have the option to sign up, but the dates avail don't work for me. That's not a hesitation on the science of the vaccine at all, but I could see how people would spin that to vaccine hesitancy
Not surprising at all. I know for a fact my father was a career firefighter and EMT in retirement... he's be a Trump following COVID skeptic all year.
My mom works for a pharmacy and is administering the vaccine and many of her more rural pharmacy staff (mostly PoC) won't take the vaccine despite it being an employment requirement and they being medical professionals.
70M people voted for Trump. People are crazier than they come off to be and the country varies widely in where it gets information

That’s their personal choice.
Assuming most first responders are not elderly or have compromised immune systems, is it really necessary for them to risk the side effects of a vaccine rushed to market?
If I was in their shoes I’d probably take the vaccine given the high level of contact with the public, but I totally get those that don’t feel it’s worth the risk.
While we can say not rushed to market we have not had the luxury of years to see what will happen if you get the vaccine or if you get covid. There is no guarantee that you won't get covid if you get the vaccine. History as shown that drugs given historically as safe were proven to cause problems down the road. I am not for or against the vaccine, I think people should have a choice. I also think if they choose no and still go to work everyday they should not be chastised or fired. If however they choose no and expect to stay home because they are afraid and still keep their job then they have an issue. Let's be more realistic here. Also put the teachers ahead of the old people. We need our schools back. It will have a much bigger impact overall then on the elderly who we should be able to better protect for a bit longer. I am elderly at 61.

Stay off Parlor, my man.
My brother is a first responder and only 20% of the people in his station got vaccinated. The others refused. To someone else’s point, we (this bowl) are in a bubble. First responders have way different backgrounds and operate in a completely different world than white collar America
Spike protein changes - i.e. bye bye vaccine effectiveness
My confidence in the vaccine doesn’t depend on the misinformed opinions of others.

That sounds like a very accurate and thought out survey sampling of healthcare professionals
My friend (doctor) and his (doctor) fiancé sent me this meme. Felt relevant
Stealing this - and yep, one of the health professionals I know even proudly posted their CDC COVID vaccine record card on Facebook. This whole thread full of armchair virologists is crazy, “people are saying...”
My sister-in-law is a first line worker opting out right now. They were being offered the Pfizer vaccine and she has a history of severe allergic reactions to drugs—the UK has warned against this combo.
She’s not anti-vaccine or anti-science. She has been working with Covid patients since March. Since she will have to continue with all the protocols whether she is vaccinated or not, she’d rather wait until she can have a safer option for her.
Similarly, I have a friend who is a hcp in a hospital. She was in line to get her vaccine, but opted to defer her vaccination due to the fact she is still breastfeeding her child. She believes in vaccines and herd immunity, and plans to take it once her child is weaned. However, there aren’t data are available to assess the effects of COVID-19 Vaccine she was offered on the breastfed infant or on milk production/excretion.
Distrust is the reason they are scared. Reassurance and transparency is needed so more people can see that its for the better.
Want to remind folks here that were all in our own little bubbles here.
For people to extrapolate their own personal experience to a group as diverse as first responders is pretty absurd and should be taken with a huge grain of salt

Lol the anti-vaxxers are out in full force today
Its why the model of distribution needs to change. Let everyone who wants it register via a state/county database and provide priority to the first responders while allocating any extra capacity to other groups.
This way we’ll get more people vaccinated rather than block doses for people who are willing to wait.
I guess more of them need to die first

LOL - ok, we get it Accenture 9, er High Register Sean. Go back to looking for dog men in the woods behind your house and being afraid of the Illuminati and reptile overlords and the rest of us will go get the vaccine before you.
Do yourself a favor and watch/read listen to news created outside of the US - almost any Asian, Middle East or European country will do. And, as VP1 said, stay off of Parler. It’s not a conspiracy, pal.
If private companies/government start mandating it, I gotta believe it goes up to SCOTUS. Which will probably rubber stamp said parties.

The prioritization schemes are failing/too complex. I’m with Nate Silver advocating for three age based tiers only. Reasonably equitable and super easy to verify.
Push it out to pharmacies and let’s go.
Lol I don’t think anyone thinks McKinsey when thinking about figuring out what’s best for the greater good.
Anyway, this is 65% a communications job to explain deriving public benefit from vaccinations is a numbers game and we should be focused on whatever maximizes number of vaccinated people in the shortest period. We ALL benefit from that even if not vaccinated ourselves.
Then 35% an implementation game to make sure the vaccine is in the right places and just as important there’s an adequately staffed and orderly administration process.
I know about 30 healthcare professionals. 30 of them have taken it. No side effects.
I know that's a small sample size, but it's meaningful on a personal level. Ask the medical professionals around you.

All of my doc, PA, nurse, RT, dentist, and other health professional friends have gotten it. Sore arms, fatigue, and mild headaches were the worst of the side effects so far. I didn’t even think about how many people in my social circle are healthcare providers until I started seeing them post about it!

I live with LA firefighters and they don’t want to take the vaccine, at least not first. No one trusts the vaccines are safe
Clearly there’s a reason why everyone is refusing it
Okay mr scientist good job
A lot of first responders are blue collar white people, a demographic that leans toward Trump. Given what Trump and his party have been saying about the situation over the past year, ranging from hoax to just a flu, to easily treated with other things, to part of a healthcare industry conspiracy, do you really think his supporters would be in a rush to get the vaccine?
Yup. Been working on COVID testing project and we switched our focus to vaccines around late Dec. Group 1A (first responders, nurses etc.) uptake is pretty low so it’s trickling down to group 1B so we don’t waste vaccines
