First time interviewing as an experienced hire. When a recruiter asks salary expectations, do I counter and ask for a range? I don’t want to go high & get dinged but also don’t want to get shorted.

What I’ve said which leaves room for negotiation later (and has worked quite well) is “well, given my current role, the reputation and network I’ve built at my firm, and that I’m up for promotion this year (whether true or not true), I probably wouldn’t consider moving for anything under X”. I quoted X as ~30% higher than current salary, received an offer at ~40% higher, and ended up with about 60% higher after negotiation (to another consulting firm, not an industry exit). And of course promo as well

Depends upon how needy you are. If you’re not under pressure, just tell them your minimum expectations and get done with it. Saves time for everyone

And you think the recruiter will tell you the real top range? It works both ways. You have to first know what you’re looking for. On one hand, many people advise against sharing your current salary - because they should pay you based on your value, not your current pay. On the other hand, we are saying pay me the most I can - not what I think my value is. Isn’t that double standards?

Give a range, but do not give a number below what you would actually be happy with. If the number you want gets you dinged, you probably wouldn't have accepted their offer anyway. No sense in wasting each other's time if you can identify that deal breaker early on.

You can try

just say you’re in a salary band of x-y

Did they call you or did you call them?

Exactly. Someone reaches out to me? I'm asking for high end market compensation.

I have two interviews on Tuesday, and in the application I filled out I listed 100-120k as salary expectation, with 100 being the minimum of what I want, with 105 what I’m shooting for and anything above that being extra gravy.

Just say you are negotiable from the minimum amount you are willing to take

I had a 1st round interview last week and I didn’t love the sound of the job. It’s in higher ed. It would also be a 20k pay cut (105 -> 85). They want to do a final round with me this week. During the interview, the director who would be my manager said they are understaffed and very busy. She also said someone in this role needs to love working. I don’t necessarily want to transition to another busy place for a pay cut. The only perk I see is the time off university staff get and tuition...comt

How soon is too soon to be preparing for a lateral move? I did my 1L summer internship in a niche area of securities law, loved it, took courses on it. I decided I wanted to explore securities law a little more broadly and not to pigeonhole myself. The firm I’m at is great—doing sec lit—but has zero work in that niche area that I liked. I’m afraid that I am passing on a passion, and I don’t want to get too “old” for a firm to take me on if I have zero experience in a specialty area. Advice? Thx
