I use Mint to track spending and budgets. I find it very helpful. I will say with a newborn the “sleep deprived Amazon-ing” is a thing and I know I bought a bunch of weird, less than useful things - so not a bad idea to track budgets during leave.

Omg Amazon shopping during 3am feeds is sooo dangerous! 🤣 Whatever you do, OP, no online purchases in the middle of the night! Browsing yes. Buying no! I’m basic and use an Excel sheet. I download my bank transactions every month and look at trends and compare to my plan. I forgot to account for water and electricity going up a little (so much baby laundry?!) but my biggest change was in Amazon spending. Some of it necessary (diapers, formula), some of it impulse (they’re recommending the cutest toy for teething so I must buy it!). Working on curbing that now.

I spent way more on coffee and other random takeouts that really added up on maternity leave. I didn’t have any close friends in the city as we had recently moved and it was incredibly lonely and isolating with a newborn. So I walked to a coffee shop every single day (baby also only slept in a carrier while I was walking, so we spent 1 to 2 hours a day out on walks). I don’t regret it and it was so good for my mental health, but definitely budgeting it in for number two :-)

This sounds amazing! Glad you were able to do this!

It’s hard to tell you. I’m on mat leave with #2 now. Our food budget has definitely increased because I’m buying more convenience foods (pre chopped veggies, salad kits, etc) to save time. We also utilize delivery services for groceries so add in tip money. You’ll need things like diapers & wipes, of course. But you’ll also need to buy baby gear you didn’t realize you needed/wanted. Or baby doesn’t like what you bought and you need to try something different (carrier/wrap, bottle, pacifier, swaddle). Once you get in your groove, you might find out that your day looks differently than you anticipated snd you need different gear. Maybe you planned on baby wearing, but baby hates it and you need a stroller. Or you planned on using a stroller, but baby hates the stroller snd you need a carrier.

Do you not get full pay during may leave?

I do, however still would like to see if there are additional resources to help me plan for leave.

If you still get your normal pay I’m not sure it would change from your normal budget - anything specific you have in mind?

Advice to young lawyers. Read a book. I saw the thread about savings and many young lawyers (20s and 30s) don’t know how to open up a brokerage account or invest in their 401k. I know they don’t teach personal finance in school (though they should!), but my advice is that you should go to your local library and read a book about the subject. You have the skills necessary but you must invest in yourself. No one will look out for you.
