First year associate. Been here 5 months and I got a 30 day probation to improve performance or else I’m out. Any tips...

Dang lol, 5 months in and already on probation. That’s pretty impressive. My tip is regardless of the outcome, use that time while you’re still employed to find a new job cause you’re already labeled as a bad worker, get out to have a fresh start and learn from your mistakes

Wow that’s early! Not even a year in. Are they looking to cut people and this is just an excuse?

likesmarthelpful

Your senior hates you. 5 months is way too early.....

This happened to me as well. Although I was told I had to figure it out myself and not ask questions. Joining a new firm is very stressful and not everyone learns at the same speed. If they can't invest the proper time to train then F**ck them. There are many other firms out there that will.

I would suggest having a very frank discussion with your PML to make sure you fully understand what you will be evaluated on, and who will be performing the evaluation. Next, I would meet with that person (likely your senior or manager) to discuss what they will be looking for, and to establish regular check-ins to make sure you are on track, and fully meeting their expectations. Long term, I would make sure you are checking in regularly with anyone you report to regarding your performance. It sucks sometimes, but at the end of the day your rating is how your reviewer perceives you. Even if it’s not entirely fair (e.g. your reviewers expectations are not in line with your experience level), it’s better to know they are upset before it’s escalated, so you can manage it. Good luck with everything!

This is the core problem of public accounting firms. They don’t care enough to train their employees. I think PIP is a joke and makes firms look like they don’t know how to develop the skills of their staff. Once I left public accounting, the amount I started learning was enormous

like

Yikes, I would say start the job search. Will be very difficult to pull out of that situation and you’ll be better off stating fresh somewhere else.

That is so wrong. What office are you from?

What on earth did you do to deserve that?

Talk to your seniors. Talk to your managers. Ask for targeted ways to improve your performance, and then implement those FAST. We had a first year in my office who didn’t make it past 4 months due to performance - things might have been different for that person if they had put in any hint of effort to improve.

like

In my group(Tax Chicago), they usually wait at least a year! Did they give you specifics?

like

That's crazy! I have an S3 on my team, can't figure out how to update DRLs or understand how to update eAudit screens and makes no attempts for improvement, still no PIP.

Did you get any feedback on what you’re “lacking” in performance? If not you should, just to make sure it’s something you can actually control. If you can’t, look for something else.

like

GTFO seriously. Well I have 2 thoughts: either your superiors don’t want you to succeed or your current environment may not to be what is needed for you to excel. speak to hr and request more information regarding why you are on the PIP. Understand the stipulations associated with that performance plan and ask for feedback of what you can do to improve. In big 4 politics is heavy so it’s possible you got the PIP for un-work related things. Some managers fabricate feedback to get individuals on the PIP from my experience. When your on the PIP it’s code for “your on a short leash so consider applying for other jobs to have a safe plan b option ready at any time”. Keep your head on a swivel, cheers

Ask questions to understand why and how things should be done. Even have someone walk you through an example then you take it from there.

like

My first impression is that you screw up something really bad. I see a number of people with mediocre, at best, performance and still keep going. Would you please provide more details on what the feedback was? I doubt they would put you on PIP without giving you some guidance/feedback.

like

You folks are crazy. If someone clearly sucks at the 5 month mark why should we have to expend countless hours fixing everything. It’s quite clear to me as a manager who is a lost cause by the 5-6 month mark.

PwC 5 - I would leave it off and not say a thing. One’s resume is their own self portrait. It’s can’t be a lie, but it doesn’t have to be a tell-all biographical either. Every item on a resume should be value-added, and this poster’s experience in a short time at KPMG clearly has not been value-added. If the conversation about a time gap come up, then I would suggest that they welcome the question and turn it into a conversation. But I think that showing such a short stint would be damaging to a resume with nothing to put it into context
