First year associate, coming up on evaluation period. Not close to meeting hours, my confidence is shot completely. I’m trying, but will it get better? On the verge of a mental break.

Have you been on a stabilizing trajectory? This is a long career. One year doesn’t mean a ton. Spend some time reviewing what you have done, what you have learned, who you’ve worked with, and what you are looking forward to tackle. That will help you with goal setting as well as self-advocacy. First years are in control of very little but their attitude.

Thank you, I appreciate that

Lots (if not most) of first years don’t hit their hours - don’t stress too much. Just try to be proactive and make yourself available if/when people reach out for your help.

Honestly op I’m sorry but this is not good. Are you happy at the firm? I would consider lateraling if everyone is too busy to mentor you- not a good sign imho. You deserve better!

Same boat, worried but try not to allow the worry to beat me down.

Volunteer for research or maybe the group has projects that have been push to the back burner like precedent docs or template checklists, etc. may not be the most glamorous work. Even if you don’t have hours, stress the work you have done and what you are prepared to do.

Is your group slow?

Been there

Seek out the seniors to teach you, watch PLIs, look up stuff on PLC.

I just found out that my CPA failed to file my returns and submit payment on time even though they confirmed on the 18th that it was going to be filed that day. I do corporate taxes and have extremely limited experience in personal taxes. What should I be concerned about here other than the penalty and late fees for their negligence?

Anyone else just sitting around waiting for the ax to drop? I'm a soon to be 2nd year corporate associate who has seen work completely dry up. My utilization held pretty steady around 50% immediately after shutdown, but August was below 15 billables with no appreciable work in the pipeline. Aside from letting people know I'm available and doing pro-bono/CLE, it's starting to feel like a serious "covidcation" leading to termination.

Midlevel M&A just lateraled to my V10 firm and have been doing 75-ish billable hrs per week for the past three weeks. I’m exhausted from sleeping 4-5hr per night. Is this typical or is my firm just toxic? Feel like I can’t physically do this long term - any thoughts on whether litigation is more sustainable or what area to switch into within biglaw?

New firm. Integration is running smoothly. Want to build relationships with upper ranks who don’t staff me directly. Recommended strategies?

Had someone lateral into our firm as a fifth year (soon to be sixth). They were kind of a retool and went from small law to the firm I’m at. They are still learning a lot of basic stuff, and I think it’s weird that the firm hired someone at that level as a retool. They sometimes ask me for help with stuff, but I’m just getting annoyed at this point. Can I just say “no” since they’re about to be a mid/senior associate who should know all of this?
