First year associate here meeting with client stakeholder for the first time. Do I shut my mouth and let my manager do all the talking or should I interject intermittently?

Good question to ask said manager before the meeting

like

Introduce yourself, name and role on project. No title, years of experience or college. Take a seat next to manager and take notes... at the end of meeting say thank you and leave.

like

You should talk to your manager to align on expectation first. Some managers prefer to lead the whole meeting and just let you observe and take notes since you are new. Some might work with you to find speaking roles so you don’t get into awkward situations in the client meeting.

like

If you have valid questions fine, but never feel the pressure to speak just because you think you should. I go to plenty of meetings where I barely say a thing. Purely because there are more experienced people in the room. So I listen and take notes.

like

Just talk to your manager about how you can be most helpful. Getting into the habit of gameplanning and setting expectations will help you in your whole career

If I'm in such a meeting and have an opinion on/question about something, I write it down and hand it to my manager to read. If it makes sense, they'll bring it up. If not, they'll leave it alone and explain why later. Eventually, you'll know enough to not be worried about this stuff. 👍🏽

I’m a first-year associate and the advice I got from my previous project was, “the client pay too much for you to sit through a meeting without saying anything.” Align with your manager first and prepare well for each meeting if you plan to talk. Does wonders for confidence!

like

@PwC I think that advice is stupid as well. Your client pays for the right advice. If you don’t know it, there is no need to speak up and ask a question so “you have a voice”. But I do agree that planning ahead and owning a section is perfectly fine.

like

I would try to find something to say so it’s not totally awkward, but don’t force anything or let yourself become too preoccupied with your lack of verbal contributions

Thanks everyone!

^ agree, it's not about talking but being productive. So if you are in there but not speaking make sure you are typing furiously

I’m newish to this and not sure. If your extension isn’t signed yet, you can’t continue work for the client right until it is? At old firm, it was continue work then charge code for previous time/wk.

I just inherited someone and made him a Creative Project Manager. He is naturally a good PM (but never did it officially), and is a great people person, but doesn't have any professional experience as a CPM. I want to get him some great training so he can be great at it. We use InMotion Now as our project management software (which is generally great for us). Do you have any recommendations on any online trainings, seminars, podcasts, whatever, that I can pass along to him? TIA.

I got hired as a freelancer on a project. 2 days in and we’re off to a slow start getting access to what I need. It’s paid hourly. I blocked out time to work a full day knowing I’d dive right in but that’s not how it turned out. My question is do I bill the full day even though I only put in a few hours of kick off calls and contacting folks to get access to the things I need? It’s not my fault they were disorganized. What would you do?

Hi 🐠, need some advice. Was told by my manager that time doing research (for info related to my client) is not client billable and has to be charged to the overhead code. This strikes me as fundamentally wrong, esp bc this is a flat rate project so the hours will just affect my utilization / internal metrics, not how much the client is billed. I asked for a non-billable code that counts towards utilization but was told my utilization is fine even though I’d be billing <40hrs & to use OH code
