First year associate, out of A3 clerkship. I need to stay at the firm for a year to keep my bonus, which I need to pay my loans, but I'm gonna GTFO the minute the year is up. Even at a nice firm, expectations and WLB are unbearable. How to I make it through the year with my sanity intact?

The fact that you know you intend to leave can help! In my experience, one of the biggest stressors for young lawyers is worrying about making a long-term impression. So do your best to emotionally disengage.

Beyond that, make it a priority to turn in great work product and build some strong relationships so you can get at least one great reference out of this job. At the same time, keep an eye on your billables and don't be shy about turning down work or setting boundaries. As a junior associate, setting boundaries is easiest when you do it quietly. For example - you get an assignment from a senior associate. They don't give you a deadline. Many junior associates will assume it is super urgent and try to get it done ASAP. Instead, take a look at your workload, identify what seems like a reasonable deadline to you, and suggest it to the senior associate when you confirm receipt of the assignment.

What practice area?

Probably, if I can land something. I'm also thinking of doing plaintiff's work potentially. I realize now that I'm just not into super complex business litigation and I was happiest working on basic employment discrimination matters as a clerk.

Was a bit caught off guard this week when I received notice that I was not moving forward in the interview process for a position in-house after being asked to apply by the person hiring and subsequently told I would move forward to the next stage b/c they were very interested in me. Given the sudden 180 & the fact the position is still open, I assume there was a concern about me that came up but literally no idea what it could have been! Would love advice on if (& how should ask for feedback?

I've only been in biglaw for a year, but have been practicing for seven years so far. I used to be a state regulator for this practice area and generally enjoy working at a private firm. A partner at a boutique firm that I'm friends with has called me every few months to check-in and see how I'm doing. During our last call he essentially offered a job after I get another year of experience in private practice. Five year track to partnership. No billable hours.

Thoughts on moving from Big Law to a boutique firm? Assuming pay is pretty equal. Anyone do this and is happier? Pros / cons?
