I think it definitely gets better over time and with more experience. However, your overall attitude & personality also have a lot to do with work anxiety. If you’re the type that “cares too much,” then the anxiety will never go away. The job is really not for everyone.
I definitely had that for my first 18 months, but then I got on some really awesome teams who were supportive and gave confidence to fail, so to speak. If you’re on a team that just treats you like garbage all day, the anxiety probably isn’t going to lift anytime soon
I’m in my 2nd year and I used to have anxiety too. But once you go through crazy busy season that you can’t even think of whether you’re doing good or bad, anxiety just goes away. And then you’ll find yourself coaching 1st year thinking you learned a lot for past one year! You’ll be fine and you’ll get there :)
It does get better. Many of us are type A in this business, so we want to make sure we are doing the best job. It is a hard job, so what you are feeling is very normal, but it does get better.
You are far from alone with these feelings
No they dont go away...ever. You just kind of get used to it
I think we’ve all been there. My path has gone like this:
Year 1-2: Anxiety ridden, took every mistake very personally, worked myself to death to make an impact.
Year 2-4: Bitter at whole machine of Big Four and wanted out.
Year 5-6: Life is too short, happy I have a job, don’t want or need partner track and happy if I can go an entire busy season without buying a meal out of my own pocket.
Priorities change I guess.
I'm a first year... but I have prior experience at a small firm. Honestly, take out a piece of paper and write down a list of things that make you anxious, spend a whole day purposely working one one of those things to conquer or clear up that anxiety. Be sure to recognize your own progress in little and big things :)
1st year here feeling the exact same way. Glad I’m not alone with it
I think it definitely goes away. It does come back from time to time but its not as bad. It also helps if you figure out why it happens and take proactive steps to negate it.
Most people assume you will be useless starting out anyways, it’s best to just accept that you are learning and putting in the work to improve. There really are no bad questions and some things you only learn as you encounter them on the job or when you mess up.
