My ability to figure things out given 0 guidance is one of the most valuable skills pwc has taught me
Deloitte 1: I think that's part of the beast that separates a great senior from a good senior. Seniors by nature are always going to be extremely busy, but it's part of their job to coach staff and interns. There are a ton of people who can be good "accountants" but those types of intangibles are what separate you from the group. I personally always made time to answer questions because at the end of the day you have to review the work. I'd rather knock it out on the front end versus having to rework 6 hours of work that has already been done.
Make sure you won't be one of them in the future treating newbies. Try your best figure out something by yourself. If this project goes a long period , try to talk to your manager and experience manager about rolling off
Same as last year unless overwhelming evidence to the contrary is staring you in the face
Sounds like you have a crappy Senior that would rather see you fail than teach you. I'm with EY1, just make sure you don't continue that trend.
Some people in public treat this job like a puzzle but they don’t give you all the pieces. As a staff it sucks but having shitty seniors and above has made me realize what not to do when I’m a senior.
I agree with most of what was said here. Don’t stop asking. If you don’t get any help, try to put something and mark it prepared, send it to their review. If it’s wrong, then they know why... Also like has been said, don’t forget this when you promote. Learn what not to do and what type of a senior you want to be in the future
... to people on other teams for guidance on these work papers as some of the stuff I’m getting assigned is meant for seniors/managers to be preparing (such as budgets). What else can I do? I’m going crazy haha and it’s making me really lose all motivation now because it doesn’t feel like anything I do makes a difference
I’ve been in situations like this on both ends. Sometimes people above are literally just too busy to hold your hand. If you need more guidance block time off on their calendar if possible. Other times, there’s just literally nothing they could really do except to tell you to go figure it out on your own. Not ideal, but try your best and hope your efforts will be recognized.
That's a really weird team composition. I agree with what's been said. Keep asking. Don't let up. If they really don't have time there's nothing uou can do but carry on
If you are all together, make sure your question is directed to a specific person. It
May not be the most effective advice but I think if you are flat out being ignored I wouldn’t be above saying, “is anyone going to acknowledge me here.” Also, as work is assigned maybe ask who you should be following up with for questions. If you still get ignored, send an email with all of your questions so it’s documented you made every effort on your end. As a senior, there are times I can’t always answer a question but I usually just say that to the team and we get back around to it
I’m with SG1 on this. Also make sure to send out emails to the senior asking him for work and help. CYA
I agree @EY 2!
Can’t do much else other than hope that your efforts are recognized
@PwC 1: I’m usually okay on that end, but these are higher level workpapers that usually just the managers and partners are touching. Additionally my team isn’t providing client contacts or other resources so I don’t have a way to get support. Feel very stuck, and haven’t ever had issues on a team before
Is there a senior on the team? Who all is part of this team?
It’s made up of two staff, three seniors, two managers, and a partner. The other staff have told me that it’s been really difficult for them as well because it’s “like talking to a wall”. It’s extremely hands off. Sometimes I don’t think this is a bad thing, but I think it’s hands off in the wrong way. The team has a reputation around the office as well as being the black sheep essentially, so when I told people I was getting moved to it everyone said “oh boy, good luck” hahaha. Just trying to find a way to approach this situation so that I can do a decent job with them since I’ll be on this team at least through April 2019
Just out of curiosity, the entire team doesn’t answer questions? Are you guys together at a client or all working remote?
That's sound really bad, maybe if you ask to manager advice?
It’s probably because everyone else is still trying to figure things out too. It’s tough when there’s no guidance.
