First-time homebuyer here from DC. I was told to shop around for rates so I was thinking of checking Penfed, Chase and Bank of America. Is this the right combination? Any other banks I should check?

Chase has been very competitive lately. Bring them a better offer and they tend to match and add incentives like points

Thanks! I'll take note of this.

If you are really looking for rock bottom rates, create a burner account and profile with one of the online lead generators. You will get 4 or 5 rate quotes in a day or so. They are usually from no name banks or mortgage brokers but can be much cheaper than the big names. The loans are typically serviced by a big bank after you close, if that makes you feel better.

Federal hill mortgage was amazing and did everything over email. Lowest rate I found and lowest closing costs. They are based in Baltimore but we closed on a home an hour away

Bought in MoCo a few years ago. Checked with Costco lenders, a lead generator (bankrate.com) and realtor suggested TDBank. TD beat them all with rates, points and credit towards closing costs. I took a jumbo loan FWIW. Good luck OP!

Check US Bank as well. Good rates, great service, didn't sell my loan off. Had two different mortgages and a refi. Rate is not the single metric to decide a mortgage...at least not once you're talking tenths of percent.
