First-year 5th grade teacher here. Once I am able to get in my classroom, I will only have 2 weeks to get ready. Any advice on what I can do to prep before getting into my room would be appreciated.

Hi! I teach 3-5 graders Here’s one tip. I usually spend the first couple of weeks before going back to school planning out my bulletin boards and prepping all the necessary materials , so once I get in I can put them up which immediately sets the tone and helps me to focus. Good luck!

Start working on your everyday routines and procedures, class jobs, how students will turn in work, how are you going to be organized, classroom library set up. Your classroom doesn’t need to be finished for when your kiddos come..have them help decorate and make it their own!

Start thinking about how you want your classroom management system to be, activities you can do with your kids, organization, etc. Obviously there are things you can’t do unless you are in your classroom, but try to think of things that you can already have planned without being in there.

Definitely get the management plan done. Think about bulletin board ideas. Prep the Back to school night info for parents. Get your first week of school energizers and icebreakers planned out. If you have access to TE’s You can use the standards and the TE’s to start making a skeleton 6 week plan across the curriculum and to start organizing the projects you want to create to enhance those subjects/topics. Get your google classroom prepped and ready. Start a class blog!

The one thing I always get mad at myself for is leaving those bulletin board letters to the last minute!! If you know what your bulletin boards are going to say and you have those letters from the teacher store... start punching them out while watching TV NOW! Get all of your things that you want to laminate ready so you can go in, laminate, and then bring it home and veg in front of the tv and again, cut it all out after you are exhausted from moving stuff around all day😉

You can also have your students take a more active roll in classroom design and set up! This saves you time and gives them ownership. My suggestion would be to choose 1 area of the classroom or a couple specific tasks (those pesky bulletin board letters, cough cough) to give the students control over. Let them choose democratically (circle, fishbowl discussion) what needs to be done and how to proceed within the limitations you have set. It is really interesting to watch what they do! You will really get to know the kids personalities by watching who leads, who speaks up for their ideas, who sits back and follows, etc

And as a favorite quote from my own teacher in elementary school “this is a democracy but I am the queen”, always reserve the right to veto or overrule (but only if absolutely necessary, I usually do this with prompting questions until students realize it is unrealistic, unsafe, or illogical)

2 weeks?! That's a TON of time. Every year I try to get into my room a week before (they take our keys away over the summer) and have had to move rooms after setting up and had my schedule completely changed 2 days before the first day of school. You'll get it all done. Don't stress it.

You can start working on your bulletin boards at home. Teachers Pay Teachers is an amazing source as well as Pinterest. You can also lay down the framework and organization for your classroom (rules and procedures). I also would invest in one of those personal laminators. They’re pretty amazing Pic is of my classroom door from TPT
