If the furniture comes with instructions you are not being “handy”, you are following instructions.
And since when is there an “expert” level of furniture assembly? Are you certified by IKEA? Have a gold allen wrench (Er, I mean “hex key”)?

VP- ikea is child’s play. Order some from bed bath and beyond. They have 2 pages with 15-20 things to put together with just a picture on each page lol
Pro
Considering IKEA furniture is cheap and you have to sometimes go to extreme measures to align things, screw them in etc. I'd say that's fairly handy lol. That being said, I can also paint, caulk, re-seal, fix things, install things, woodwork, reconstruct / DIY, the list goes on. Can't cook for sh*t though. Small single female (stating this b/c I have a feeling the opinions on here are mostly male)

Cool story!!! You must be so proud!!!
The 2 pound shelves are not what I was referring to here btw.
No, following the step by step directions for an IKEA bookcase is not “handy”. Changing out a light fixture, caulking your bathtub, repairing simple fixes - those things are “handy”.

Eh handy means doing something yourself instead of calling a handyman. Nobody would call a handyman to put together a piece of furniture.

Sad for those people.

Building IKEA furniture is NOT handy. Building your own furniture is handy.
It’s borderline handy. I associate handy with fixing and installation as opposed to putting something together from a box.

Building furniture from an IKEA or an Office Max handbook is not handy.
Fixing your natural gas dryer, letting you get two more years of life out of it, that is handy.

Hahaha... no.. maybe for a silver spooner that grew up with lawn and pool boys

Fish i can take care of the lawn, paint, plaster, fix holes, stain, other things. This is in addition too and just wanted to shake things up

M1 - 🤩 wow. That’s handy for sure.
OP - handiness is overrated, no?
Chief
It's handy. I need someone handy.. wanna come over?
Chief
GT - I can do those things as well. I would argue that it would still be considered handy since you are doing something useful for the household I guess.
Nope. You didn’t do anything useful for the household, you followed directions.
Being handy requires a certain level of ingenuity, skill, or knowledge others don’t typically have.
Painting is a good example. Sure anyone can paint but a person who’s handy knows how to cut trim without tape, roll evenly, etc.

Y’all are in politic mode on me here lol, I need to go sit and a corner and rethink that I did anything handy
I’m just kidding OP and I’m assuming others on here are just having a little fun as well. If they’re serious then eff ‘em.
We all started somewhere. Putting together some furniture is a great step on your way to handiness. You’ve got tons of folks beat already!
OP, get a table saw and show everyone who's the boss!

D1. I’m going to start making the pieces the other fish put together from ikea
It's not handy but you can always learn. Next time something breaks, fix instead of hiring someone else to do it or completely replacing it.
Have you asked her what is her definition of being handy? If you can do most of maintenance around your house (e.g., electric, paint, fix random stuff, take care of the lawn and garden, trim bushes) and car (change filters, spark plugs, know your maintenance schedule) you are handy.
Chief
I've never built furniture from IKEA so don't know about it.
But have any of you built furniture from Wayfair?
OP, I think it's handy if you can put it together.
I think it makes you handy!
