What practice group are you in?

We just have a broad litigation but I subfocus on toxic tort, antitrust, some finance work

If you want in house my best advice is to look at your existing clients and figure out whether any of them could use your help. I’m not saying you should check whether they are advertising a current position. If there’s a client that fits that description, you have a few options (depending on your comfort level). First, you could speak with a partner at your firm that has relationships there and see if transitioning to the client is an option. I know some people aren’t comfortable doing that but it’s 100% in the firm’s interest to help you. The other option (if you have a close relationship) is to reach out to the client yourself and see if they have time to talk. Id explain that you’re considering a career move, were thinking about going in house and wanted to get their thoughts and any advice they might have. You can discuss whether they have any positions on the call but the key is not to put them on the spot to hire you. For litigators, you should definitely focus on a specialty so you’re more marketable and yrs 4-7 really are a sweet spot to move.

Thank you, this makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately the partners at my firm have been VERY protective of their clients. We have close to no client contact (and this is true of all of us, not just me — my paranoia forced me to check with my fellow associates plenty of times :)) I agree on the specialty. I would say at this point my speciality is definitely large, complex toxic tort cases, with dozens of defendants. I have SO much experience with pleadings, discovery, depositions/30(b)(6) witness preparation, LARGE, complex dispositive motions, joint defense groups, trial prep, etc. I don’t know where in house those skills belong… or if those are even marketable. I feel like in house doesn’t want that but they want transactional or L&E

I just received a job offer for a position that better aligns with my skills and education. It’s also something I want to do and would get me out of banking, so to speak. The proposed salary offer is only 10% more than what I am making now, though. I currently have a fully remote job and have tons of free time and flexibility. I love my current job as it affords me time with my kids and it’s stress free. The new job is in an office setting and will have more responsibility. Not sure what to do?

Considering leaving for another firm job, one year in. Thoughts? New position would be a better practice area fit and would only work with clients in the industry I want. Currently it’s about 60% of what I’d like. Also, current firm seems to be stagnating with low hours to go around. I’m worried about not making hours, missing my bonus, and low professional development. Comparable on prestige & exit options and would be $5k less. Just worried about burning bridges and leaving “too soon.”

I have a union position as a therapist. My management kept telling me "we're working on it" when I asked about a raise since getting my LPC. Our union contract does not renew until 7/1 of next year. I brought this to my supervisors attention and now the director emails me to say basically "yes, we are working on a raise but nothing can happen until 7/1/2022". Has anyone else had this experience? Of management being vague and just stringing people along?

Looking for some insight! What role(s) in GCP would be a fit for someone who is great at building research prototypes and then leveraging/leading software engineers to realize the details and build them out? What would that be called at google? Thank you!

Looking at an offer from a Series E startup and trying to figure out if this is worth it. I’m at 2 years post-MBA at a Big 4 (current TC right around 200k). New TC would be right around 200k, but would be like a 25% reduction in base - I like the role and the team but I dunno if that kind of base reduction is common for consulting exits? I see a lot of TC improvements, but wondering if those folks see a base jump too? Thanks!

There's a lot of backstory to this but I can only type so much SO I've been with my company for 10.5 hours and just found out they've increased their base pay for starting employees $3-5/hr. I have received my annual 3-4% raises, only because I always make sure to ask for it, but nothing more. They didn't even acknowledge my 10 year anniversary with the company and it's a pretty small company (less than 100 employees). I feel I should get a $3-5/hr raise since the base pay was raised. Thoughts?

Transitioned into consulting post-MBA (1.5 years ago) and generally enjoyed the experience. Since I joined my comp has gone up ~13% and I’ve liked my project teams but in my most recent review talk my partner told me he thought I was ready to be promoted and had advocated for me but there was an HR rule against it and I was on-track to be promoted in 6 months. Since then I’ve learned that one of my classmates (started 2-3 months before me due to COVID) was promoted last cycle.
