The title is clickbait. The proposed language essentially bans sex ed and related topics in primary school classrooms. Totally good with that given normal people don’t talk about sex with children.
It's funny. In the rest of the world, we do age-appropriate sex ed starting in kindergarten.
They start by teaching and practicing consent. (asking if they can hug someone, for example).
By grade 6, they learn biology and reproductive health. Many kids are just about starting puberty.
Obviously, more explicit stuff is not appropriate for those ages.
But sad fact: speaking with a teacher who in grade 3 teaches about molestation (this is part of the curriculum), she says that every year there is at least 1 child who comes to her after and opens up about inappropriate touching by someone (usually family or family friend).
Appropriate or not, this stuff is important. Those kids get help and support. The rest get education that can help them to better understand how to navigate life and how their own bodies work.
Eh, he’ll do whatever is popular every time. He’ll push small government and then support burning trash like this. He does seem to have a strong pulse on what Floridians like and it’ll be very entertaining to see how he and Trump shake out for the 2024 Presidential race.
Although I do like desantis, I think it’s annoying. But again it’s the parents that wanted this to happen
Not at all, I’ve been in Florida for 2 years now and I’m a big fan of DeSantis
Sex ed is the least of our problems, don’t you think?
Also, odd position for a small-government type to take.
As a trans person who went to primary to high school in Florida during a time (2000s) where school districts were not particularly friendly to LGBTQ students, I think this bill is a concerning return to the mindset prevalent then. Specifically speaking of trans kids, I feel really bad for kids who see enough trans people to begin to recognize that they are trans, but have to deal with an environment that attempts to out them to unsupportive parents, demonizes them in political discourse, and removes any of their agency in advocating for themselves.
I agree with it. Teaching sexual health is important (and lacking), but it is not teacher's responsibility to being teaching sex/gender identity/etc at such a young age. Let kids just be kids before they get out into the real world and have to be bombarded with all of it.
Yeah, wtf? My grade 5 kid is trans, and out. There were same sex parents at my kids' previous school.
Not talking about it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It means you are telling these kids that they don't belong, and that they are less than their heteronormative peers.

But if you read the bill, there is an out for schools to notify parents about anything if the school believes it will cause harm. And there is not a blanket prohibition on discussing sexual orientation / gender identity. Only that such discussions need to be “age appropriate” in primary school. I really don’t see why this bill is causing so much rancor in the headlines. I doubt a lot of people have actually read it, which is why I posted a link to the bill itself, as opposed to random articles from snopes and msnbc.

But, to me, schools always notify parents if they think a student is being harmed. I went to private school and the school was very involved with parents—especially when a teacher felt a student was at-risk.

I like DeSantis and voted for him. And will do so again this year. I think the media is portraying this bill as “don’t say gay” is typical headline grabbing by the left that doesn’t reflect the text of the bill at all. Read the actual bill—it’s not very long (and has nothing to do with “don’t say gay”):

Then you and I read the bill differently. If it does pass, then the courts have to decide. But I certainly don’t see this as anti gay or transphobic in any way.
