Folks in KPMG IT M&A strategy group, what do the typical projects look like? I know you are involved in pre-deal DD, PMI and SMO, but do only a select few get on DD projects while most do PMO type work? I am trying to avoid a PwC DDV experience. Also, where do people typically exit to?

Just joined this group within the last year and my experience has been great so far. The type of work you end up doing is generally based on what you communicate to leadership - the IT M&A leadership is pretty stellar (IMHO) and I’ve had no issues asking and getting the type of projects that I want to do. No such thing as “a select few do DD, and everyone else does IMO/SMO” from what I’ve seen. There’s a healthy project mix. From an exit POV, I’m newer so haven’t seen too many, but did have a colleague exit to a CIO role recently (medium sized company). Others have been to PE ops side, one or two went to big tech, and one at the more junior level went to competitor.

Makes sense and tracks true to what project life is like at K…you’ll get plenty of opportunity to do DD work.

The good thing about our group is that you can typically choose and work with leadership to get the experience and development you're looking for. While there are folks that choose to only do DDs, there are folks that choose to only do STC, or IMO/SMO, and a lot of folks that want a variety. As far as exits, CIO roles, integration/seperation managers at strategics, and PE IT operating partner roles are common options when exiting consulting.

In recent years our DD capabilities have advanced significantly and we do a lot of DD work these days (few hundred deals) . Probably more DD work than our Big4 competitors this year, can't speak to WM.

From what I’m seeing at Deloitte and mirroring it to KPMG, I would expect the majority of the work to be on PMO. At least PMO being the bread and butter, then you get some pre-sign DD work as an investment to get into the PMO phase

K1, thanks for the info. It’s a fair statement, I also have colleagues that have only done PMO or DD projects and have always enjoyed them. You brought up a good point, if you are good and you’ve done the right things (in terms of building your network within the firm), you do get a good mix of projects. But I guess end of the day, at least at D I feel like we are doing DD as an investment for PMO work. I’ve even seen external postings for roles that are strictly in DD or IMO capacity at SC/M/D levels

I didn’t have any connections there to support a referral. Would you be willing to talk about your experience?

Btw I have PwC recruiter talking to me about the DS and the PEVC practice. I was under the impression DS does CDD and PEVC is a different name for DDV. Could I be wrong here?

@P1 - short an sweat answer, love it! Thanks for the insight!

Can you explain what’s wrong with PwC DDV? Just joined the group a month ago

Thanks for that
