Folks, taking a certificate course in paralegal studies does not make one a “certified” paralegal.

I'm very surprised by the amount of paralegals and attorneys that don't understand the difference. I saw a paralegal job posting from the CA state bar that didn't even understand the difference 🤦🏼‍♀️

They truly have no idea. I used to want to take a certification exam (not from NALA, but the other one) and when I would talk about it, attorneys would just stare at me. My experience so far is that they don’t know or care about our profession.

Do any of you have the title “paralegal” but no paralegal certification? I do a lot of actual paralegal work but not sure if it would be looked down upon to use that as my title on LinkedIn/email signature.

(My company doesn’t really assign titles btw - my boss calls me his paralegal)

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

I have a total of 12 months of experience as an IP paralegal. The first 6 months were with a global law firm and the second 6 months were with a famous retail company. I am currently working with an agency that would like to assign me to a company that is in need of an IP paralegal for a total of 6 months. My current salary with the agency is £35k (based on my current experience) but I would like to ask for more money before I accept this new role. Please advise how much money I should ask for.

I started at my office over a year and a half ago as a legal assistant. I moved up to a paralegal role in December, but once Covid hit and we let some people go, I was given some of the responsibilities of legal assistant and receptionist on top of my paralegal position. They want to increase my salary to $33,000 /year, which is a substantial increase, but I was making so little as a legal assistant that I’m not sure. I live in a metropolitan city with 1 yr experience. Let me know your thoughts!

I must say that the people i work with are incredible however the lead attorney is completely insufferable. They call after hours constantly and love to micro manage me and other associates . We are constantly berated and are made to feel like crap. This is my first firm working as a paralegal and i need to know if this is just me and this firm. Additionally i feel as tho i am underpaid with 36k
