I have not. I spent my first two years there constantly being told I was failing to meet expectations, but was promoted twice and objectively did well. It took me going to b-school to realize how warped that experience was. What a strange way to manage your people.

Would be interested to learn how the culture compares with McKinsey
epic is weird but there are two other companies that come to mind, though not in healthcare. bridgewater is much worse, a culture of “radical transparency,” and netflix is known to fire people seemingly at random based on feedback/manager consensus, though with generous severance packages.
Nowhere else. I agree it is a weird dynamic, and it is taking me a lot of time to recover from it mentally.
Yeah, wish I had taken the physician route
I'm not exactly a koolaid drinker but I should clarify that nobody is 'encouraged to submit negative feedback about everyone else'. We are encouraged to share feedback in general, but there is no emphasis on negative feedback. Managers don't include their team members in communication asking for feedback but it's definitely no secret that they will do that.
On average feedback submitted is usually positive. I really appreciate the feedback culture because it takes the pressure off of metrics or quantitative measurement systems and instead gives visibility into your real impact on the team and your other team members.
I haven't had any other comparable job.
To answer the asked question no I have not seen a feedback culture like Epic in other organizations.
To clarify though, the request is for feedback not negative feedback. Here is an example of a request.
Hi,
I'm reaching out to see if you have any feedback for John Doe based on your work with him as a co-owner of <committee> or his role as a <job tittle> and <process> expert. If you do, could you submit feedback for John here by EOD 6/19?
Some ideas to get you started:
• What are his greatest strengths in the group?
• How could John be a stronger leader in <committee>?
• Feedback on other areas/projects where you worked with him?
• Other general feedback?
Let me know if you’d prefer to meet to talk through your feedback, and I’ll set something up.
I would say 80% of the feedback I give is positive and the other 20% would be what I would call constructive criticism.
Nowhere else I've worked prior-- all my friends are shocked when I tell them how things go here. It's luck of the draw-- if you get a manager who hasn't sipped the koolaid, they will advocate for you. If not, then good luck.
