Food for thought - Maybe it’s not that you hate going into the office; maybe you just don’t like the people you work with.

Oh, I like those people. I just dislike being cold and hungry.

And fluorescent lights and grey-beige walls

Or I just like the people I live with better.

Yeah, I think that's got something to do with it. Though I'll admit I hate working from home, but being able to log in immediately and log off when I'm done and walk over to the couch is a big bonus. The 45 min commute can be a real obstacle there.

Jlaw clerk 1- no one is advocating to get rid of wfh- just stating preferences here. Personally I don’t only work for comp and prestige. I would not be interested in working if I didn’t have an awesome group of people that I was a part of and could connect to. Above a certain point I don’t care about $. Work takes up a significant majority of life so I have high standards for what I expect, and of course everyone should work to define their own standard.

I don't mind people nearly as much as I mind having to take time to make myself look presentable and then commute to the office which takes an hour. As opposed to walking down my stairs in any ole state and starting work as soon as I open my computer.

like

I mean I’d be happy to commute if they reduced my hours expectation accordingly. If they want me to contribute to “culture” more than I already do (I’m heavily involved in recruiting and mentoring) “by being in the office” then make it worth my time. Bc right now my advancement and compensation incentives are not compatible with being in the office regularly.

like

No problem being in office or being at home. Just hate the commute so home > office.

I love the people I work with and attend every social event I can! But as a mom of 2 toddlers, working in biglaw, I’m not going to make up the 2 hrs a day that I lose getting ready/commuting by eating into family time or further eating into the very little sleep I already get.

likesmart

Agree with OP. As to cold and hungry that too.

like

Maybe it’s both, right? For those that commute and have families, it’s the loss of that time to go to a place with people you don’t like. For me, it’s def both. Wfh made some of the awful culture I have to deal with bearable…

like

That’s a given.

Kind of a harsh take, but there’s some truth to it - it’s not really people, but it’s the job, environment and lack of need for me. I have had jobs where chatting or meeting in an unstructured way was an important/fun part of my day. Including a legal job, btw - albeit in gov. If I still worked there, I’d be really missing that. Still isn’t clear to me what the benefit of being in an office in a biglaw job is.

Difference without a distinction

I just hate wearing pants and shorts are still considered unacceptable (except for that one partner).

But seriously, I wouldn’t stay with a firm for more than a year if I didn’t like the people I was working with. It’s easier to get work done at home for me and saves 1-2 hours of non-billable commute time.

Husband is doing well in his career, my son is thriving in school...Im still struggling to find a work place that i like. I been at my current employer for a year and to say the least i feel under utilized, undermined , only hired for my "optics" ( only minority in the team.. literally introduced once as the Puerto Rican HR lady). At first I thought some of the red flags was due to me being the new team member... but its gotten worst.... I want out... I have applied and interviewed. No luck yet

Anyone got a decision after reapplying H1B immediately after first denial?

The people I am working with became extremely controlling, to a point where I am told I have to sit in front of my screen at all time and they refuse to give even a 2 minute notice via email prior to unscheduled video meetings. For context— I reply to emails within 5 minutes, I bill 60+ hours week every week, I always pick up phone. I am in a big law setting but I’ve been at this firm for years and it’s never been this hard. It’s gotten out of control.

Anyone move to the “burbs” recently? We’re having such a hard time narrowing down where to look. Leesburg would be the furthest we would go out to, but ideally Arlington/Alexandria/Fairfax area. Budget $750k 3br 2bath and minimal immediate Renos needed. I feel like it’s impossible to find anything and it’s so discouraging. Total income $350k annually.
