For 21-22, I’m going to have a 2nd grade student eligible for services under DD ruling, but the student’s subcategories for IEP goals are currently only personal-social (sharing, taking turns, raising hand to speak) & adaptive (starting, staying focused on, & completing work) skills. I just finished my 1st full year as a sped teacher, so I’m trying to figure out how to develop a plan for working on these skills. Any suggestions?

This student should be aging out of DD in second grade. The goals should be based on the specific needs of the student. If they are for taking turns, set up specific times to work on games with visuals to work on turn taking (giving and taking), waiting, and being a good sport when losing. Visuals are great in this area and decrease the verbal from staff when redirecting

Same in ND. We do additional testing to then determine category for special education as needed.

Definitely have a point system with rewards. You can use books such as “My Mouth is a Volcano’ and the workbook that comes with it

You can also try Social Stories (Carol Gray). You can probably find a bunch already created on line.

You’ll also need to create academic goals.

Thanks, IL. It’s the same in MS.

Teach social skills. There’s a lot of free curriculum out there. Lessons already made, etc.

Most of these skills can be explicitly taught following your classroom management plan of routines and procedures. Social opportunities can happen across the school environment day and group work. I generally make a daily academic schedule and plot the opportunities and skills each student needs to work on.

Where to stay in the Algarve? Traveling to Portugal with family in Late September and looking to rent a house somewhere on the south coast. Suggestions on which towns to look in? There will be 5 of us, all adults. Hoping to find something within 10min walk to a nice beach and a few restaurants also within walking. Doesn't need to be a big town though. Something more on the quaint side that still has some local charm might be nice. Does a place like this exist?

I have been teaching students with special needs for 21 years now. The class size used to be 12:1. Now it’s 15:1, but you can have up to 18 students with the variance. Now my Principal said that you can have up to 19 students!!!! Is anyone else noticing that the self contained class is getting larger?

What type of bins, shelves, containers are you planning to use?

Also if you have any other ideas for this year let me know! Thank you 😊

Any help is appreciated.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows of or has curriculum for students in a Study Skills class?

I have been given three sections of Study Skills with 15-20 students in each.
I have always taught SDC, but this year my district said that we can do that now. When I got my credential I was not allowed to teach Resource classes unless I took classes and received the Resource Certificate. Does anyone know if this is legal?

I received my credentials in 1996/1997 and the other in 1998

Just wanted to share this with people who would understand. Had 4 IEP meetings last week. When the case manager asked one mother if she had any concerns she said her only concern was that her kindergarten son with autism loved me so much she was afraid of him being promoted and being out of my room. I told her not to worry, in our program I will have him for 2 more years. Boy that made me feel good.

Hi. I am a Transition teacher in California. I would like to know what is the ratio of students to staff for community outings in your districts? I have been teaching in my district for 20+ years and it has always been 4:1 ratio for our moderate/severe transition classes. Now our director is saying it's 6:1 and I don't feel like this is safe for our students.
