For all my cybersecurity fishies here, what would you do if you had to start all over again? No experience, no IT background, completely from scratch.

As a Cyber professional who started off with tangential but not directly related Cyber experience (software development for my first 6 years), if I could I would:

1. Start my career with internships in Cybersecurity
2. Narrow down the vast cyber domains to my top 3-5 domains of interest (IAM, NetSec, AppSec, Cloud, SOC, Incident Response, Architecture, Data Protection, GRC, etc.)
3. Ask questions of industry professions in these domains of interest, to build breadth of knowledge
4. Network with key leaders in each of those domains
5. Take and clear multiple entry certs across 1-2 of these chosen cyber domains
6. Identify best fit domain and settle there earlier in career

I would agree. Find your niche early and then dig in. Become the one everyone in your team/organization knows will have the answer or know where to go from where you/they are in their knowledge from that point in time to achieve a goal/obtain the right answer(s).

To add to that, I was “the guy” on my team when I was in support for a particular technology. It’s a rewarding feeling to be able to help people to succeed while succeeding yourself.

Also remember that your career path can change over time as you grow, so don’t resist and always keep learning.

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

Hiya Guys, so I can tell I am burned out and inching into the grey pit of complacency. The burn out is already here, but the slide into grey-pit is not acceptable. I have a masters in business admin, 8+yrs of hospitality management experience, and a bachelors in science.

I really need advice/strategy for skill development, despite burn out and the weakened motivation. I am in a role that can, (in 2+ yrs), make me eligible to start at entry-level position in an area I want. I don't have 2 yrs.

Hello, I do business development for an ADR firm. My background is in legal business management and development and I'd really like to transition to a similar role but not in a vastly different industry. Interviewing with a company I’m excited about and they requested to have the next level (I believe final level) be pushed to the second week of January since they’re team is overwhelmed. I agreed and suggested times and am waiting to hear back. Meanwhile I had another company reach out this past week for a role I’m less excited over. They’ve already reached out for my final interview round this week. I already disclosed that I’m waiting to hear from a company I’ve been interviewing with. Cont’d.

I interviewed for Data Analyst role at EY, it went well and the job sounds great, but I'm a bit hesitant to leave PwC because I really like the firm and I'm just 8 months in my job as an associate at a subgroup of ITS that has some focus on technology and analytics but it's mostly tax compliance.

I do want to transition to data analytics but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to go to another big 4, or maybe just look for a position in industry.

Any advice or similar experience?

How do you know when it’s best to stay in your position?

I’m tired of pivoting. I feel like my job has growth potential and I like my company. Also it seems like my company places a lot of emphasis on experience and I can only get that with time.

On the other hand I work on a small team and there is definitely room for improvement. I think the issue is the size of the team? Like, if there were 2-3 more people it wouldn’t be too bad.

I’m conflicted. Thoughts?
