If you have to do this spend the money and get bergeon sanding blocks

It's a 9F quartz - it will likely be decades before it goes in for a service, as I replace the battery and lubricate the case gasket at home.
I solved my problem for under $10 with jewelers-grade sand paper...why would I purchase the sanding blocks?

It worked really well! I practiced on a less expensive watch first, and then tried it on the GS. The key is to move the paper as straight as possible in one direction with the grain. I sanded one of these links and the others I left untouched - even when looking through a loupe it's hard to tell which one I sanded.
