For assistant holiday gifts, my firm does $100 x class year, but I just started at this firm 2 months ago. Would it be ok to give less than $100 x class year (like $50 x class year)?

Think about assistant bonuses like another tax except there is really no benefit to paying it, but if you don’t pay it you can get screwed. Just pay up it’s the cost of doing business.

Is this only in NY? I work at a firm in Boston and people are just giving $100 flat…

like

No. You likely make 3-4x as much as they do. You can afford the extra monies.

like

No. Pay up. If you need to justify it, think of it as for good service to be rendered next year.

No.

Do you pay your god awful assistant that just ignores your requests?

funny

Yes. You don’t want to be known as the guy who’s too cheap/greedy to give a holiday gift.

You should still pay if your assistant is “godawful” and/or you don’t ask the assistant to “do anything.” This isn’t an opportunity to reward yourself for not delegating or following up on projects your assistant should be doing. If those are issues they should be addressed through the appropriate channels. It would be like going to a restaurant getting a steak that is over cooked, not saying anything to justify stuffing the waiter.

Piggybacking off this post, is this also the standard gift for paralegals? I work with a specific paralegal very often, but the others maybe only like once or twice a year.

Over the years I’ve gotten a handful of gift cards, not usually from the people I work with most, but from people I work with some who I am friendly with socially.

like

Do you also pay if you never ask your assistant to do anything for you?

How does it work with assistant teams? This is my first firm that has a team that serves all junior associates.

Assuming half the salary for Canadian big law associates, we could do $50 x year??

Do most people just do an Amazon gift card? That way it’s closer to an actual year-end bonus than a bunch of random things they may or may not want?

What do you do if you have no assistant or paralegal assigned to you?

Had an interview at a firm where they have an unlimited vacation policy that’s just “speak with your deal teams in advance to get time off”. Anyone actually know in practice how many days is a normal amount to request in a @year? My current firm gives you 20 days and very much pushes you to take those days, so just wondering if anyone at a firm with a similar policy takes around 20 without issue.

How do you guys schedule your hours? Say I need to hit 200 hours per month. Currently I take the amount of working days in a month (M-F) and divide it by 200 to get how many hours I need to bill per day. For example, May has 20 working days, so I need to bill 10hrs./day M-F. I’ve done exactly that thus far and have been able to stick to a pretty consistent schedule. But I know a lot work on weekends. For instance, if I worked Saturdays too there are 25 billable days which means 8hrs/day.

Hello! A senior associate that I work for is expecting and she will be going on parental leave soon. She has been a great mentor to me and so I wanted to get/send her a gift congratulating her on the new baby once she goes on her leave. Any ideas for a gift? (We aren’t incredibly close so it doesn’t seem as easy as shopping for a friend/family member who just had a baby, if that makes sense) TIA!
