You cash out, collect the capital plus interest accrued and settle any loans associated with the capital you paid in. Depending on the loan situation you could end up with very little - just the difference between interest rates on your capital account versus loan.

I know it’s been discussed here on another thread and varies by practice ... but FWIW my personal experience has been 300k minimum base for a brand new risk assurance MD (so I think low on totem pole of pay) and (way) up from there. I know one of ours in MC brings in high sixes, all in, each year but would be a partner anywhere else, he was an acquired hand from one of our big acquisitions and is happy as a clam where he’s at looking at retiring in 2-3 years

This probably depends on the firm and how you made the purchase. In general, you forfeit them OR owe $ to pay off balance.

(by forfeit I mean cash out)

Decided that I’m leaving audit today. Trying to understand the full range of opportunities in forensics. Will have my CPA and CFE. So far, I understand that there are client-serving firms like FTI and then the B4 will have forensics arms as well. What are some other forensic accounting roles? Pros and cons? Better than audit? Honestly just looking to learn anything.

Good luck to those who are going into their first busy season! Yes, it’s daunting at first - we’ve all been there (albeit, not in a remote environment amidst a pandemic.) My best advice is to take one day at a time (marathon, not a sprint). Remember audit/tax/consulting is not life or death, and you WILL make it through. Have patience with yourself and your teams. Find a mentor! Don’t forget you can always find some moral support (read: self-deprecating humor) in your fellow fish!
