For employees under an unlimited PTO policy, what are your thoughts and do you prefer it to an accrual system?

Depends a lot on how easy it is to get vacation approved. I think an accrual system is better as you get paid out when you leave.

I love it. I went from unlimited PTO to accrual and then back to unlimited. With unlimited I took a handful of vacations a year, but also was able to take off a Friday here and there whenever needed without feeling guilty or keeping track of my numbers. One year I think I took close to 30 days.. then, when I was with an accrual system, I only had 16 days. I had to plan out my entire year in advance, was over the 16 limit due to weddings and other one off days I had to take (only one 4 day vacation in that mix), and that meant I couldn’t get sick/take sick days without forfeiting a planned vaca day, etc. drove me nuts. Got invited to a friends baby shower in another city, but couldn’t go with everyone else due to lack of PTO

Prefer it, ive found our managers to be extremely flexible and it’s nice not having to do math to figure out which days you can take off

I think it’s totally dependent on the management. I personally do not have it, but close friends and family that have unlimited vacation days say they are often denied requests for vacation and are made to feel guilty for taking it. As a result, they end up taking less vacation than I do. I know that can also apply to those that get a set amount of PTO, but when you have PTO accrued it is easier to plead your case as that is a set amount of time you have earned. End of the day though, bad management will always make PTO difficult.

Eh I think it just depends, I've been at both and liked having a set 20 days with rollover ability. We have folks who take way too much PTO, and they probably should be a bit judged but I don't think they are. For example, saw someone get promoted with 28 days of PTO (w/o special life events) last year. I think its pretty normal to take about 15 to 20 days including Fridays.

Please post your the name of your employmers too. Curious to see what firms offer such benefits. I personally would appreciate such a policy, but of course I am committed to never abusing such policy and being considerate of the timing aspect of when to take PTO.

While we have an accrual system that rolls over year to year, my father’s former company changed to an unlimited policy. He hated it. Not because people took too much vacation but because he and others were discouraged from taking it. For reference he was an SVP at Sears. I think it could be great or toxic all depending on the company culture

If I can take a year off because it is unlimited then sure I would prefer unlimited

How does unlimited paid leave work? Eg Netflix

If I go for a long holiday in Europe would I still get paid my full salary omg 😲

I’ve never been a regular vacation-taker, but now I’m resolved to become one. Especially because my company has an unlimited PTO policy. Would 4 weeks of total vacation per year be considered a lot/excessive at your company? I’m thinking of doing two one week vacations, and one two week vacation, and booking them far in advance.
