For everyone downplaying the economic impact of COVID-19, please research the collateral damage of this ... start with the increase in suicides

There are many other results that come from this. -More time spent with families (which is positive) -Less time spent travelling for work -Cleaner air, water and environment at large -Cooking from home more -As SVP said above, fewer traffic deaths. Probably less gun violence too The gyms are closed, but there are at-home workouts. Takeaway is that yes, some people are lonely, but also, many others are not and thriving

You can put a negative spin on ANYTHING. I’m with you, P3. 80/20 rule applies here.

We should look at history. I think country is not as strong as past generations. In ww2 whole europe and america experienced grave loss of life and property but we were stronger mentally. I don't know if any soldier thought of committing suicide in ww2 no matter how bad situation was. In this age of hyperconnectivity we can easily endure isolation. We can put ourselves to more work to dug us out of this. Even you lost employment doesn't mean you lost skills to learn and be ready for job market. Unfortunately our political leadership has ignored aspect of giving people hope and direction for future. All the right and left wing media has done is to slander each other. There is not a single anchor, politician talking about how we are stronger and beat this slowdown. Corona is nothing close to what we have endured in past century

Agreed. People now are so much used to antidepressants and other crap to pretend they’re « normal ». The mental health in this country is a huge problem

Nobody is downplaying the economic impact. You are being short-sighted, however, if you do think not taking strong action now/sooner/two months ago would mean we wouldn't need to shutdown or have restrictions later. If the disease gets out of control, we are shutting down anyway, except with way more people dead from our healthcare system being overwhelmed.

Nope that was me. I’ve since toned it down and see the value in staying closed to help protect lives

Miami just went 6 weeks without a murder for the first time since 1967. Add the drop in murders to your research!

It did cross my mind to wonder how the drugs dealers and criminals are getting by in this time. I've been watching too much wire and better call Saul 😆

For those researching things such as suicide, also research things such as traffic deaths, lightning strike deaths, bee sting deaths, and all the other deaths not occuring at the moment.

like

As I posted elsewhere, exactly that. Miami hasn't had a murder in 6 weeks. First time since the 70s!

Yeah I have a lot to add here. So, at 20 years old I had a boyfriend kill himself, with me on the phone with him. I had the task of cleaning out the apartment we shared after that. I spent years in therapy and attended support groups. Suicide is not a political football. Workers are not sacrificial lambs for the sake of economy (atleast beyond the way we all already are). Government needs to step in and help support workers that are unable to work. Period. We do not sacrifice them. What kind of depression do you think they would suffer losing eachother, losing family, risking bringing it home but still having to work? If anyone is worried about economic induced depression then they need to vote for candidates that would pass legislation offering widespread healthcare coverage that includes mental health. Because we already had plenty of economic induced depression. Removing the barriers and stigmas with seeking treatment for our mental wellbeing would be in the greater interest of our entire population and our economy.

Recessions actually lead to fewer deaths. Maybe not in suicides but net deaths tend to be lower.

Uh #CovidKills None of us are happy about a tanking economy. But there can be no economy if the population is getting slammed by a debilitating and/or fatal virus. You can “re-open the economy” all you want - consumers won’t be out there consuming the same as before. Not until there’s consistent, reliable testing - or something similar - to calm people, so they feel okay, shopping, going to movies, etc.

I think about suicide every day. I don’t know how much longer I can just stay inside with no end in sight.

This too shall pass. In a year, you will be shocked that you were even considering suicide. That’s how I felt anyway after the feelings subsided.

Call someone, speak to a friend, go for a short walk in the sun. It might help

I’d rather have the choice of death than be killed by a virus.

I’m back to having no billable work again. My department almost completely dried up when covid started, so I’ve been relying on work from other busy departments at my firm to keep me busy since March.
