OP isn't trying to party or be friends with clients. It's LinkedIn; this is its purpose.
To jump in and clarify—definitely not looking to form any sort of personal relationship with the clients. I find it’s helpful to maintain professional connections via LinkedIn to maintain and build rapport. Also, it’s a great way to continue networking and identify opportunities to find new clients or form new client relationships.
Yes, it is appropriate. I would actually highly recommend that you do it. You can never start building your professional network too early.
My thought is "no" .... An attorney must ensure a perspective, and an outward appearance, as neutral (ignoring advocacy and counsel). Of course we advocate and advise... but, if writing an opinion, it has to have the tone of review of facts, not friendship... To associate via LinkedIn or other social platforms, calls into question bias.
Huh? No. It helps me have great small talk, "Congrats on the award" or "looks like your recent product launch went well!"
In venture, you're not impartial--you are advocating for your client!
It seems EP 1 may be speaking as a litigator but I think the advice would be exactly backwards for a deal atty. If you have a rapport with the principal or client contact (small talk at an event, they talk to you directly on call or emails, they actually know your name instead of just being "the associate") especially someone at your similar level then I say go for it. The worst they probably do is reject the connection but I don't see a client moving work elsewhere bc an associate is aggressive on LinkedIn.
Even as a litigator...
It’s appropriate as long as it is based on having met or worked with the individual/invitee. To just add someone for the sake of adding us disingenuous.
