Women in Advertising

For hiring exec/sr leadership, it feels like women need lots of industry exp while men can be new to advertising. I went to a panel & all 4 women were 15+ yr ad vets, the 1 man had 1yr exp in ads.

It’s very common for men to be promoted or given opportunities based on “potential” and very uncommon for women to be. Usually seeing “potential” in someone ties very closely to how much they remind you of yourself.

This exact thing happened with one of my directs a few years back when he left my team/agency. Now we have the same title. The cherry on the top, probably making more than me.

Apparently this applies to ageism in the industry as well. I’ve heard more than a handful of people say that women begin to age out at 40, but that men have about 10 more “useful” years beyond that in the industry. So for men job opportunities begin to dry up at 50-53. 🤮

SC1, nope. There’s probably a lot of them.

I would venture this relates to the research showing women are much less likely to apply for a job they’re not 100% qualified while men will apply if they are 40% qualified or something like that.

So recruiter reached out & I feel like he kinda gave me a feeling that he comes from a position above. I’m like, come on, you reached out to me for a position so please be humble when talking to me.

Question about referrals. If someone you don’t personally know reaches out from your network asking for a referral (alum from same school or someone who worked at the same company you did), do you do it, or no?

Need honest opinion from 🐠. Background: previously a big four consultant in tech consulting. Didn’t like the tech implementation work at all and needed to pivot. After obtaining my masters in data science, I landed a good role that actually uses what I’ve learned. However, this role also made me realize that data science (at least in this organization) has a very low ceiling, and is also highly on the technical side. I see myself eventually wanting to move to leadership/management positions.

Got an offer for 25% more today. I realized I don't care about this job anyways and that i would rather do the same job for more money and that my exit strategy is to be a landlord and not work :)
