For how much would you leave a “$100k salary at a stress-free, in-house job that let’s me clock out at 4:30pm with no egos and low bandwidth/creative output” to go chase a high-paced role at an agency? (Or even another in-house job)

No amount of money can replace being stress free unless it’s a HUGE jump like $250+. If you’re comfortable with $100k, stay forever.

likeuplifting

Probably for double, so $200k.

Keep you current job. But start your own thing on the side and use your extra creativity to market it.

like

Thought about this. My own personal side hustle might just be the best way to express my creativity.

Depends on your life situation. If you’re single or married without kids, go do it. But if you have little ones, your situation is ideal.

likehelpful

can you freelance on the side to fulfill the need for fast paced?

like

This is a great idea.

Man, I’d love to get the opportunity to leave a $100k job.

like

Creative work.

Agency is like eating ‘ok’ food that gives you indigestion 300 days a year + Michelin star food 65 days a yr — w/ the occasional indigestion.

In-house is like eating ‘ok’ food year round — 60 of those days, you get indigestion. The rest is all good.

I miss filet mignon diarrhea sometimes...

...sometimes.

Then i clock out at 4:43pm, and forget it ever mattered.

Dude, I own my own studio/agency but I’d like to know how I can give it all up and apply for your job. 😅

The more serious answer: could you potentially work out something like a sabbatical or leave of absence to try the agency job without losing the great job you already have?

You might get into an agency and find that you love it, but there’s also a really good chance that the unpredictability, go-go-go environment, and often boring/tedious client work would have you regretting the change.

I think it also depends on where you live. If you’re in NYC, $100k USD is nice but you’re not exactly living the high-life, so it might be worth the change if you were able to increase your quality of life dramatically.

If you’re in a lower-cost market, where $100k USD is more than enough to live an incredibly comfortable life, then that would also make an impact on the decision. (If it was me.)

like

Hehe, i know.

I landed the job because of big agency experience. In hindsight, i liked the agency life because it fed my ego — until I saw how dumb it was. I do miss creating witty stuff (ideating campaigns and writing a tv/olv/radio script), tho. In-house is more marketing than advertising... writing product pages, branding, photo shoots, and some digital/retail headlines.

But then I clock out at 430p and forget i ever cared lol

I dont live in NYC anymore. But i do live where $100k is a fairly good salary if you’re single, a bit ok if you’re married, and a bit tight if you have a kid. I have a kid. So, im kinda betting on a promotion and maybe my spouse soon-to-come income.

If you enjoy your work/life balance then I say, stay. More money doesn’t bring more happiness. However, make sure you’re contributing as much as you can to your 401(k) or other investments. Because, when you’re 55 and don’t have much $ saved then you’ll REALLY be stressed.

smart

Depends on what you value more right now. Do you need the money and want the experience? If you’re still young, maybe the answer is yes. Or do you like the ease of a job that is low-stress enough to sacrifice an experience you’d really grow from.

I have 2 masters (mba, ms) from top schools, been in consulting for over 10 years, I am confident that I know my stuff well..but still I keep getting rejected. Is it common to negotiate software engineer salary at smaller companies? I know it’s common at FAANG, but what about for companies with around 200 engineers? I have a counter offer from my current company and on-site interviews scheduled for end of July with google and Amazon, but I’d prefer to go with the smaller local company if I can negotiate the salary (from offer letter) up another 5% or so.

How many firms is too many? I’ve practiced 13 years. Since I was a 1st year associate, every 3 years or so I’ve been recruited for another opportunity that is hard to pass up. Should I decline to pursue the opportunity just so I have a longer track record at my current firm? This will be my 4th if I move.

Can someone explain how billable hours work? At a new agency and although I had to fill timesheets at my previous agencies, they were mainly used to ensure we weren’t over servicing a client/for setting the appropriate retainer for contract renewals. I asked ppl at my agency but haven’t gotten a proper explanation.
