For int‘l 🐠 living in the U.S, was moving here worth it? Is it still worth staying? Looking to get some perspective in deciding whether it’s worth pursuing a green card and building a life here...

Was very happy with my decision to move here before 11/8/16. Terribly disappointed since.

Negative. My 2 cents: life’s good here, you can save a lot and overall quality of life is better. However, when I think at what cost, I feel like I was more happy in my own country. There is so much uncertainty here, be it job, be it visa status and also the related consequences...

I miss my family and friends more and more and the infra of NYC shitty at best. I would go back in a heartbeat if they can match my salary. So I think I will be back when I retire...

OP, here’s my 2cents: When I was in my 20s, i was just thrilled to work in consulting in the US. But now, no longer the case. Family and friends and inner happiness mean way more to me than pay/opportunities/“prestige” these days. Material possessions and all that could only give you this much, beyond which you’ll need to differentiate wants vs needs. Op, if you think you have not crossed that line yet, welcome to venture into this country. As for me, one thing I started to realize lately is that, i can’t buy back time /happiness / memories with my loved ones, so to me, they are much “dearer" than stuff I could get in the states. Yes, pun intended.

A1, I am from South Korea and everything is better over there except salary and career tranjectory.

+standard of living much better here than my country. Nothing to complain.

Depends on where you came from

I moved to US in the June of 2016 for work. I was very excited when I was coming but settling down here was an uphill. I didn’t have any friends or family here in the states. The change of culture, language and people was a big one to adjust to. But I think this is something anyone should expect if they’re deciding to come to any other country than their homeland. Aside that it is definitely a better country in terms of opportunities and pay. Better lifestyle. But it’s also true that for people on visa situations are very uncertain these days and even if everything goes smoothly, the wait to get a green card is beyond ridiculous. If you decide to come and stay in US, make sure to make friends and build a hobby here. Keep yourself occupied. I would be happy to settle in my own country if they matched with my salary here in the states.

like

Depends... how long is your wait? If you are from India , could be like a 70 year wait , if you are from Lithuania, two years tops... you get the idea :)

like

But having said that, I would not regret for coming here and experiencing all these. And very much grateful for the opportunities I got along the way that this country has kindly bestowed on to me.

Moved here 15 years ago. Like every other relationship the little annoyances start to take disproportionate mindshare if you’re not careful, just as the “one you left behind” starts to resemble perfection in comparison. But the US remains the please where objectively I would rather be.

Life after green card is significantly different compared to life before green card. You would stop asking these questions once you get it. Look - once you go back, you are nothing but one in a Billion gunning for that next position. So all these existential questions will suddenly stop and you would be back to square one. You can get standard of living in India but not quality of living (assuming you are from there). That’s the reason you came here in the first place (if no, please disregard my advice). You will save more here any day. Future of your children will be secure (if they study they will reach places in this country). However my suggestion would be to keep an open mind and continue doing good work. Don’t buy a house here until you get the green card. That will allow you to be ready for any unwanted circumstances in future.

Wait for an administration change!!

McK1 where you from?

Same boat. I’m on an L1 from EU and the time for getting a green card has quadrupled. So I’m wondering if I should just go back.

Where r u from OP?

I could never go back to my home country. That being said I do wish I had chosen another country besides the us to immigrate to

I’m an immigrant with H1B. Been wanting to get out of my firm so badly but every time I apply outside, I start getting dragged into work at my current firm.I was going through some pretty rigorous interviews (I failed them) and have been in a slump since. Meanwhile my current firm keeps dumping work on me and I can’t find the time to apply outside. Anyone been through something similar? I’m losing hope. The politics is also so toxic, they started screwing me over since my last performance review.

I got laid off from my accounting/consulting firm in January and have since been taking a class related to my industry but from a tech angle. I prefer to leave consulting but could stay off the work and work life balance were better. I signed up for this class thinking hiring woods be soft until midyear give or take just wish the class finished. I look on this app and it seems everyone is hiring. Am I missing the boat by not being in a full throttle job search now?
