For lawyers, If I post a political message and get fired, can I still get unemployment. Nothing disparaging against my firm.

Not a lawyer, but there is a difference between a lay-off and getting fired. Your unemployment benefits will depend by state. Most states I know don’t look at the cause for getting fired, but rather the “fired with cause” Also stop being racist.

So you want to do some conservative soapboxing, but want to make sure you can still collect welfare if things go south. Cool.

My most vocal conservative cousin is also the one who had early intervention, special ed, works for the county, was on food assistance for a time, has kids in public school, took advantage of a state low-income home buying program, and has zero for retirement/plans on Social Security and a pension from the state. He will still post memes about the need for drug testing welfare recipients and pro trump nonsense about bureaucrats. It’s a special talent the conservatives have for getting people to feel entitled to the things they want to take from others.

Well you aren't going to get fired for posting something politically correct (unless you claim to speak on behalf of your employer) so I have an educated guess of OPs opinion.

like

Lol, what were you posting

like

Are you trying to get laid off to collect unemployment?

What could be so necessary to post that you would consider losing your job over it? If you think it doesn’t align with your company’s ethics then don’t post it online for the world to see?

like

OP, did you really get fired for that statement? It’s kind of sad if that’s true. There is freedom of expression in this country. You may have to consider suing your firm.

Yeah I need to know this too lol

likefunny

Probably a nice lawsuit for wrongful termination. Maybe a class action if it’s prevalent at your firm.

funny

Not a lawyer but my understanding is depends on the state. Certain states cover substantially all cases of unemployment and others only cover if fired without cause and other states are in between. List what state you work in so a real lawyer can respond based on those specific laws.

Hey all, Been out of work for about a year now, been interviewing and actively since being laid off due to companys budget cut. Was in final / decision rounds before covid and everything has been tbd or rescinded since. Responses have been few and far in between and now the year gap is becoming a concern. Would like to ask if anyone has tips or can point me in the right direction. I come from a management consulting/prod mgt background in tech. Disregard the risk consultant title.

Would appreciate thoughts on when to pay of student loans. Have about 40k left @ 4.5% (refinanced twice). I should be able to pay them off in one lump sum in a few months with personal savings. I’m currently paying the minimum, while saving aggressively in HYSA account , contributing to 401k to employer match, and contributing to Roth IRA. Does it make sense to just knock them out or should I increase investments focus? I know there’s likely not a “right” answer but what would you do?
