For my auditors, how has remote auditing during the pandemic change your perspective on client-site auditing? What have been some pros/ cons?

It’s next to impossible to train the non-high performing staff. High performers are easy. They’ll go out of their way to seek you out for help. Lazy people were going to suck no matter where they worked. Your B/C students get lost in the cracks when you don’t physically see them. By definition, most people are average, so this describes most of the workforce that’s entered audit in the last 18 months. They’re seriously underdeveloped and it is not their fault for the most part.

like

No need to do in-person. Partners can smooch them in person, they just keep giving staff that role out of laziness.

I love working from home. My cat has a box on my desk and just lays there all day helping me work

Agreed with RSM1 - I would want to keep days at the client site to the very minimum and make working at the office the norm if we were talking about a non-wfh style. Sitting in what is typically a stuffy audit room around a conference table with a small portable screen sounds terrible

like

If the client doesn't want us there, I don't need to be at the office either. Everyone sits in their own cubicle. I can sit by myself just fine at home.

I’m totally pro wfh, but I do miss the occasional tête-à-tête and proper scaring the bejeezus out of the client, particularly when I bust them trying to sneak out early after they just left thr conference room promising to send me whatever things they probably owed me since yesterday. That, and there were some really cool people I liked working around at some clients (they weren’t necessarily part of the audit, just fun/funny to be around.)

What people actually need is to be in their firm’s office, not their clients office. This has always been my opinion and the pandemic reinforced it.

like

SA3 for what though. Most teams do not even sit together at the office. So we waste 2 hrs a day commuting for 15 min of FaceTime to answer occasional questions. The other 7hrs & 45 min sitting in a cube by myself.

like

I’m never going back to the office. I would need strong incentives to go back or I’ll just apply to a company that allows remote work. So many open jobs to be forced to commute everyday just because that’s how we used to do it.

like

Staff should either be at client site or forced to work at home office amongst other staff 1s and IIs who can help them problem solve. Too many unreliables

like

EY1: you can be in person in the office and still be unproductive. Whether you’re in or out the office shouldn’t matter otherwise. If not, then whoever did the hiring needs to reevaluate what they look for in candidates.

I personally miss being with the team in the audit room at the client. Also in my experience we seem to be much more efficient when we’re on site and clients provide PBC’s faster when we’re on site as well.

I'm sorry but I hate it, life is filled with negativity and too many people trying to micromanage. Jeez I just want to go to office and have fun.

I actually like working from home. I get so many hours in the day back for not having to commute and I feel like I'm just as productive if not more. My office is close to home (wouldn't be a big deal going there if needed) but I have some clients which involve long commutes. At least 1.5 hours one-way.

Judging from the responses, there is no right or wrong answer. Flexibility is the key & we shouldn't be forced to do one or the other.

Wfh is fine but I’m not a fan of the constant calls which takes almost half the day sometimes. Could be frustrating as a manager. Calls to manage/coach the different teams or update the Partners/SMs/Directors or calls with clients. I prefer the in-person coaching sessions/update meetings.

Back on the market and I’m coming to find two things: 1. Less desirable agencies are the ones who want people back on-site soon, with no wiggle room for remote work. 2. Example: Midwest based agency paying Midwest salaries to folks living in places like NY, SF, LA. 🧐🧐🧐🧐
