For my media peeps, what're your thoughts on the benefits of going to an independent agency versus one of the holding companies? (Also, why would a client go this route?)

Holding company agencies must deliver based on the goals set by the holding company. If one agency doesn’t perform well, the other agencies can suffer. Independent agencies set and are responsible for their own performance. They have the freedom to say no, take on passion projects, and be more nimble because there is less red tape. Why would a client go this route? Check out Horizon’s roster of clients. I’ve never worked there but have heard great things about the company—both their work and the workplace.

Been there. Done both. Independent all the way!!!

like

Done them both - independent only works if you have the budgets and client type as the big guys - otherwise your in the mid tier range with the bottom of the totem
Pole clients with terrible resourcing problems and a bunch of people who haven’t left the agency creating a lack of perception and stunting the entire growth of the agency. Independent doesn’t scale because they lack the talent and the mind set to think big and executive big. Without process and and perspective you remain average and the second you try and branch out and grow the business - there will be turn over and eventually leadership will cave and sell.

I made this num a year and change ago. Honestly, I can't decide if one has terue merits over the other. A little more autonomy, a little more appreciation for the employees, but a lot less process and the same politics as holding companies.

Wow awesome spelling on my part here...*move *true 😂

I’ve noticed that the holding companies do not do cutting edge work in biddable media. They still think like TV buyers. Independents need you to be scrappy so you are able to develop customer-centric approaches

Sat in on another team’s IR and this was one of the comps. They were getting lost in the weeds on the intricacies of the headline, but none of them had an issue with how cheesy and shitty this image was. I suggested that they might want to throw another minute or two at improving it and the CD in the project was like “why?”
