Sweetgreen or Chopt?
Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?
Can we cut down on this WWIII hype already?

Yes.
It is a solid multiplier for early career. Pays well enough and you learn project management, people management, some analysis (depends on area/focus), and get a large area of exposure to different industries.
But better than most should probably be narrowed down for accurate comparison.

I did MBB out of masters (non MBA) but in retrospect I think had I not had the opportunity to get a masters degree first it would have been a great job out of undergrad. Depending on the firm / role you build good work ethic, client hands, and general business acumen without digging yourself into a niche hole. On top of that I’d think you’re still better positioned for a solid MBA than a lot of generic non technical corporate jobs.
My views are purely anecdotal, but I think consulting surrounds you with people with above average ambition which allows you to continue to push yourself at an age where it’s super easy to become complacent, work a chill 9-5 and suddenly kick yourself when five years later you’re not where you want to be.
Realize I left out that I still think it’s a great job outside of MBB. The stronger the firm the harder they’ll probably push you and the more you’ll grow, but work life balance has its perks too.
I started working at ACN in January 2020 and so far i think it’s been worth it. The pay was amazing for someone who was making 50K at a dead end job in finance after graduation (ACN starting salary was 80K) and I’ve learned a lot since I got into consulting. It’s opened the door to so many opportunities as well. It is what you make it. There are so many people and resources at this company, you can definitely leave with something even if you don’t work for MBB

Yes. This bowl is an echo chamber we sometimes lose perspective. The pace of growth, skill sets, ability to diagnose organizational dynamics, comfort with ambiguity, instinct for driving your own career, etc aren’t things that are indoctrinated in typical LDPs at F500 companies - at least to the level that they are in consulting.
The huge exception being FAANG or SWE industry roles.

Absolutely. I went to a good school but came from a lower middle class (blue collar) family. 5 years into my career, I make over 3 times as much as my dad ever has, despite the crazy hours he’s always worked. My brother graduated in May and already makes 6 figures. He was a social science major with a sub-3.0 GPA. Where else is that possible?

Agree with C1 about certifications. Do some research and find a niche that seems interesting to you. Many emerging cloud platforms offer low or no cost certifications and if you pick a hot but still fairly small one, you just about guarantee yourself being able to get at least an interview from boutique firms that specialize in that platform. Come up with a compelling “why” and you’re set.
