Maybe their reckless with money. Also, are pictures on Instagram really a good source of info? The leap you make from Instagram pic to unspoken secret about business culture in Tokyo seems LARGE.

Everything on Instagram is for a picture. It’s not real. Unless it’s your family members all buying Bentleys, I can assure you many people are completely faking it for the benefits of likes.

While some things are comparatively expensive in Japan, COL isn’t actually that bad. For example, you can get a small studio in Tokyo for $500-$600 per month. Decent boxed lunches for $3-$5 or sit down lunches for under $10.

Instagram wanna-bes were caught using fake planes for internet fame. So don't believe the BS people say they have.
Japanese American here. I can’t speak on embezzlement in Japan, but from what I hear from relatives and my fellow Japanese pwc’ers, work culture in Tokyo is intense. It is busy season year round because the culture is work=life. It is pretty old fashioned where people tend to stay at one company their entire work career. It is also considered rude if juniors leave the office before their supervisors. Power harassment is also common.

Japanese American here also worked in big4 Japan.
You get OT pay in Japan so it helps with the lower pay. Also, because you are expected to stay late even if there is no work, my team in Japan really didn’t start working till after lunch and mostly goofed off in the mornings.
i have never seen any nice cars in japan lmao they must be sharing cars for the gram cuz whenever i’m there all i see are toyoto prius-like cars or baby trucks. japan is also pretty good with sharing comp to the public for execs, nissan situation is probably rare and there are more embezzlement in US lol
Pro
The Japanese culture values honor and integrity, not to say there aren’t bad apples, but I would say things like embezzlement happens less in Japan relative to other cultures/countries.

Transparency international- according to their index- slightly less corrupt relative to the US- which is not very corrupt relative to the rest of the world.
