If I’m outside away from people I’m not wearing a a mask. If I’m passing you on a sidewalk, I’m making sure we’re distanced and not wearing a mask.
If I’m walking inside a building, I’m wearing a mask.

Good to hear. I feel a little sick thinking I might be helping someone else justify not wearing a mask indoors. With high risk family members, the anti-mask position is hard to not take personally, as it’s putting people I love at risk. I know many feel similarly.

“Don’t be an ass with your replies”

At some point stupid needs to be called stupid and you move on. Flat earthers don’t get an equal podium with equal time to debate the shape of the world with scientists. They’re stupid. Same principle for people who don’t wear masks.

likesmarthelpful

A ludicrous comparison by an idiot. Makes sense. The science is not the issue. The issue comes down to our rights and our personal benefit. In America, the rights of the individual have always come before the safety of the populus. People can wear a mask as a courtesy, but a mandate by government is where issues arise.

I wear a mask and while I think it's a weak argument for those to say it's unconstitutional to require citizens to wear a mask, I think stores should start having signs playing on the same right.

"You have a right to refuse to wear a mask just as how I have a right to run my business as I see suited. No mask, no service."

likesmart

That's pretty common, but why is the above a weak argument? There is a big distinction between private businesses having rules to shop there and the government having rules for being in public. I wear one while in places that ask it of patrons, but not whole jogging or at the beach. If I'm the individual, I have the right not to wear one in public, but if I'm the business, I have the right to refuse service to non mask wearers.

It’s hot and hard to breathe

Should have phrased my question to include if you do/don't wear one and why. Not on a soap box. My b

Because they deemed that:
avoiding the inconvenience > the greater societal good of slower virus transmission that can lead to a safer and faster reopening back to our lives

Surgeons wear a mask for HOURS to keep YOU safe from additional infections during surgery even though it gets hot and gives THEM nothing. Do them a favor and wear yours so you don't disrespect what healthcare workers are willing to do for you.

like

Only wear one if it’s required. Don’t dispute the science that mask reduces spread. I am aligned to wearing a mask for some period of time but we need to have a plan to go back to life without masks. I don’t think it should be the new normal. Humans aren’t designed to social distance and wear masks indefinitely and that means we have introduce a level of risk that will lead to loss of life. It is tragic and we should do everything we can to help those who get sick. However we cannot ask a younger generation to pause living indefinitely with the hope we find a vaccine.

LOL I’d rather be in Asia than America rn. Have fun getting Covid bro.

I wear one where it is posted as a requirement to enter. What I find offensive about the government edicts to wear one is the number of exemptions and loose definition of what constitutes a mask. Most merely say it is some form of covering from chin to nose. Meaning items like a catcher's mask qualify but have no effectiveness in doing anything. If the rules were actually meant to restrict passage of a virus the definition of mask would specify something that could actually stop or slow transmission.

like

Exactly. If they actually believed in a mask they wouldn't say any cloth is fine. They'd require some of those medical ones, and they'd say it's required outside too so that there's no ambiguity. Or something to the extent of anytime you're within 6ft of someone. Even your own household.

Instead they just put out some unenforceable guideline to say they did something.

like

Because I follow the WHO April 6 guidelines, which state in pertinent part as follows:

“There is limited evidence that wearing a medical mask by healthy individuals in the households or among contacts of a sick patient, or among attendees of mass gatherings may be beneficial as a preventive measure. However, there is currently no evidence that wearing a mask (whether medical or other types) by healthy persons in the wider community setting, including universal community masking, can prevent them from infection with respiratory viruses, including COVID-19.”

I’m being facetious. I wear them because it’s just a minor inconvenience and it’s a rule and I follow rules. But, just saying.

likefunny

I mean, it is perfectly fine to wear one as a common courtesy, and it's nice that you follow rules, but the data you quoted is a legitimate reason to not wear one if you are out alone and are healthy. However like you said, if it's a rule at a place of business, it's not a big enough deal to not wear one.

Feels like we should be having 2 conversations: 1. do masks work? and 2. is it justified for the gov to mandate they are worn, or should it be a choice?

like

This is where being self conscious is beneficial. If you care about what people think of you, you’ll wear a mask out of fear of being judged (although the whole point of a mask now is to be selfless - prevent the spread from you to someone else).

Gives me pimples all over my chin and big headache, feel like I’m going to pass out. I get it that we should wear a mask because who knows who has it and unknowingly passes it on with any of fluid from their nose and mouth and latches onto someone that gets in their eyes, nose, mouth. What’s weird is that Fauci changed his tune. First, he said it’s not necessary and now it’s a must. Just hard to get truth nowadays.

Same but if I am outdoors within 6 feet or so I’ll wear it. I think it might be State law now

Based on the facts and how things have played out, hard to argue with wearing a mask. That said, it is hyper regional. Just above my comment, someone recommended signs “no mask, no entry.” I’m on NJ and haven’t been anywhere in three months without those signs.

Have had autoimmune conditions my whole adult life and have battled other medical conditions where I've been a little unlucky and a bit of a medical outlier.

Doctors have never talked to me about masks before and/or never advocated very strongly for vaccines. I am blessed to go to some of the best doctors in the field. Fully believe in vaccines (funny that I feel like I have to say that nowadays) but sincerely forgot to get vaccinated some years in college for flu, etc because I guess it wasn't that high on my priority list. I mean, I was even traveling the country for collegiate sports on a bus with 30+ other people while I had these medical conditions and wasn't ever told to wear a mask. I've been a consultant for my entire working career and have had to travel for it. Again, no strong recs from my docs on mask and/or vaccines (haven't forgotten to get vaccines since graduating college tho 😉).

Shouting matches of mask wearing makes me chuckle honestly. But I wear one when social distancing isn't feasible.

like

Yes, I require immunosuppressants, but strangely have never gotten those talks about masks with docs. Also got a virus in my 20s and that wasn't fun.

Edit - no I wasn't seeing ID specialists at the time

I wear a mask when I am in common indoor spaces (building lobby, grocery store, etc). If I’m out on my socially distant walk or run, I don’t wear one. I just keep my distance and pass people quickly if needed. I always bring one with me though.

I wear a mask which says “I’m hearing impaired I can’t read your lips”. No reason for me not to wear one but with others wearing them had made the easiest transactions impossible. Now I will say most mask orders allow people to drop their mask to talk to me. I’m just not real sure I want them too
