For people who left a job after less than a year, how many questions did you get (during interviews) about why you were leaving so soon? Did you have any trouble convincing interviewers that you weren’t a flight risk?

From the hiring perspective, I don't mind a one-off like that. Maybe it just wasn't a good fit. But we just tossed out a resume where this was a pattern, interspersed with months, even a year, of no employment.

like

That’s such a relief. This is definitely a one-off for me. I was at my last role for 4 years - my new job is just a bad fit.

like

It’s less about the questions you get, and more about the interviews you don’t get and don’t know that it was because of your job history.

That being said, I agree with the post above about the difference between a one-off short stint and a pattern of job hopping.

This is easy to overcome by surrendering your passport at the offer stage.

Yes, but I was relocating to another city so it was easier to explain.

My boss just hired someone who has been at 4 firms in 4 years. Many firms are still desperate for bodies so if you have a plausible reason for moving so soon then many firms will look past it.

like

Yeah. The firm verbally told me in my interview I'd be doing a certain area of law and then had me practice a totally different area. I'm just honest about it

I left after 3 months and just talked about why I was looking and what my goals were. I emphasized “while I learned alot, _______” and carried on into why I would thrive. No one really questioned me much on it. But it did take a while to get an offer so maybe behind the scenes they cared. But I’m in a way better environment and it can be done.

I lateraled after only 10 months in my first role. It wasn't an issue at all and you're in a much better situation since you had a long stint before your current role. I haven't received much traction trying to lateral again after just a year in my current role, and one of my interviewers even told me that I didn't move on in the interview process because I'm already trying to jump. That last part was a little surprising since they saw my resume and could have done the math and not wasted our collective time with the interview, but I digress!

I was interviewing 6 months in. The job was excessively tedious and I basically said that in all my interviews. Got hired at a lot of firms, but that was during the 2021-22 hiring spree, so YMMV.

Not a big deal. Just be smart in your explanation. Don’t sweat it

I already know this is going to sound pretentious so I apologize in advance but am genuinely curious. When I was applying, I only really considered MBB (and less so Bain because of focus areas since I'm not that interested in PE) - for those at other firms, what drove that decision?

Bain & Company I have a second round with Bain & Company coming up at the DC office for Experienced Consultant role. Excited, but hella nervous. Recruiter said it’d be 3 separate interviews, all with Partners; 2 case, 1 fit. About 40 mins each. First round was 2 case interviews with Sr. manager & Associate Partner. Been a rough year, so definitely looking forward to this opportunity. I’ve been on the site and going through preparation and materials. Any advice or suggestions welcomed!

Trying to transition into a UX/Product Design role, mostly because I find it more interesting. I don’t have experience on a UX/Product specific team though. I’m tired of having to be a “jack of all trades”. I’ve been applying to jobs but haven’t had much luck. Any advice on making the transition and on application process?

Does anyone do trusts and estates at an AmLaw firm? I always thought that was more of a boutique practice area. Was contacted by a recruiter, and while I'm happy with almost everything about where I'm at, the way people discuss AmLaw salaries, I feel like I should consider it since it would probably be a significant jump in salary. I'm at 120k TC, and the only way it's going up is with increased bonuses or share of originations (and I am not a networker).
