For remote folks: am I more likely to find a remote role that allows me to move around multiple times during my tenure at a big FAANG-like company, or a startup? what are things I should look out for in my search?

for extra context: there's a good chance I will move to a place outside the contiguous United States (but not a foreign country) to follow my partner for his work. I would then need to visit home (a state within the contiguous US) for a few months at a time to take care of my parents, then return to my partner. Flexibility is what I'm looking for, but I'm not really sure how flexible companies are with this kind of moving around. Is the only way to achieve this, by going freelance? Or are there W-2 employers who allow this kind of movement? Thank you

I think main concerns would be:
1) impact on working hours wrt rest of team, if you're moving time zones
2) whether or not company already has a presence there - apparently there are tax considerations that somewhat restrict which states one can work from, for my employer

But we have some people frequently work remotely from a different state than usual, for periods of time

like

+2.

I agree that some managers may be put off at the thought of someone working in a vastly different time zone.

Also, the "presence" thing is a major factor. I recently moved and switched to 100% remote. When I discussed this with my manager and HR I was given a list of states where I could and could not locate.

It varies a bit by team, but we're free to work and live wherever we want. There are a small number of exceptions regarding time zones but my 50+ person team spans every time zone between the West Coast and Eastern Europe and we make it work well.

There are rules about updating your address for where you live and how long you can spend out of the country before you have to register differently (90 days) but for domestic address changes it's as simple as changing a single field.

As a side note, we have tons of open roles in all departments and we're going to be hiring like crazy all year.

like

It is a bit of a catch-22. INHO, smaller companies are generally more open to hiring remote workers. However, they are less likely to have a tax 'presence' in as many states, making where you can live more restrictive. It may take some searching to find a company willing to have you work from HI or AK.

Do you mean move around to different positions/job titles? Or move around geographically?
For the former, hard to beat a startup for trying out different roles - sometimes multiple at the same time :)

I care a lot less about titles/roles. Like my post indicates, I want to know if it’s feasible to find employers or jobs that will let me move to different geographical locations within the United States. Once a year or every 2 years kind of moving.

Do you plan on having a permanent address somewhere or are you thinking 6m here, 5m here etc? Startup will be most flexible.

I see. Is it a practice you’ve seen before, with companies offering that kind of flexibility also asking that employee to do their own filing?

If you're remote, as long as it doesn't eff with time zones and meetings too much, I don't see that being a problem.

I had given Accenture interview on 5th March and on the same day got an email that I cleared the round then salary discussion also happened. But then they didn't release the offer. In the portal status went to " owing to business reasons we foresee some delay in processing your candidature". Also then after multiple followups got an update from HR that they don't have any requirements for the position. Now it's been more than a month what should I do ? Any suggestions would definitely help.

This may be an unpopular opinion.

But I think it's kinda shitty that when FAANG people get laid off, everyone feels bad for them and they get so many resources to get rehired, but the same is not true for people that get laid off at smaller lesser known organizations.

Like those FAANG people will be fine, they got generous severance packages. The people who actually need help often get overlooked or are forgotten.

No idea about team/culture/stability differences yet.

The non-work factors I'm debating are:
1. Cost-of-living (housing!). Could probably afford a nice ~$1.25M SFH in Seattle suburbs sooner than a fair $1.5-2M near Cupertino.
2. Public School quality. Unsure private will be affordable.
3. Weather/region: activities

Hi all, was hoping for clarity on offers from FANG/Tier 2 tech I received recently. Base pay is still within range of 130-150K, but equity components have dropped dramatically. For reference, for similar positions, I was receiving grants of 150K - 200K over 4 years for data analyst positions (4-5 YOE) in Aug’21-Feb’22. For personal reasons, I did not accept these offers. Now the equity grants are coming in like 50-70K over 4 years. Is this market wide for non SWE/PM roles due to stock market?
