For solo and small law firm owners, I am curious, if you care to share anonymously, when you opened your firm and what kind of revenue you are running this year? I want to just get an idea of what is average or common.

Depends on your area of law. Two partner firm, we launched in 2020 and made about $70k, which came from business matters and a few family law cases, and a few appellate brief writing. This second year is looking much better thankfully.

I operate a solo firm that handles real estate transactions; we had gross revenue of slightly more than $700k last year

When did you start your firm?

I started my firm in 2015. Last year my firm grossed just short of $800k. Shooting for $1.2M this year.

What was your pre solo experience?

Graduated in 2019, started solo practice the day i was sworn in (Sept) the same year. 2020 gross sales were a hair over $200k. Criminal and family law.

How did you learn your area of the law? You basically went solo with no experience?

I’m a 1styear, and there’s one other junior associate of color in my group.
The partner I work for keeps calling me her name. For ex: my name is “Sara” and her name is “Jasmine”. Names not similar, we don’t look alike - but I suppose we are about the same complexion. I can’t help but think it’s because we’re the only two black juniors. I was granting her grace because my mom accidentally calls me my sisters name and stuff, I get that it happens. But now it’s becoming a microagression. Advice?

Additional Posts in Small Law / Solos

I work at a small, 3 lawyer firm. One of the lawyers is not barred in the state we practice. Because of this, the managing attorney has been having him draft motions and other legal documents and use my name and bar number and having me file them because I will have to appear in court for the matter. Is this normal? I am not provided time to review the materials before I file them so I end up working longer days because I am nervous to file something using my name and bar number.

Trying to cut billable hours. Anyone utilize a “subscription service” for lack of a better term. EX: charge $300/week until matter resolved. Hypothetically capping your case load per associate could bring in the same amount on a steadier rate than billable hrs. (25 matters x 300 /week) Giving client ability to budget their family matter.

So I just accidentally found out that the senior associate in our office makes almost 3x the amount I do per month. For background, we have 4 attorneys, the senior associate has about 9 years more experience than I do (I have 6). This person should be paid more than me, I have no problem with that. Is it normal for there to be that big of a difference in pay? I just want to know if I’m getting screwed.
