Sounds like you want the answer to be consulting. Either way you're going to do well financially. Go where you'll be happiest.
Keep in mind the high attrition in IB and the heavier focus on Sales. Do you have the chops to even make it 10 years in IB? What if you don't? Post-MBA jumps from IB to buy-side are a lot harder than they sound in theory. What do your exit opportunities look like after IB if you can't make it? Corp Fin doesn't pay that well.
Money doesn’t buy happiness - it just makes misery less uncomfortable — find something that you like - having fun at work, or at least enjoying your work is something you’ll never regret.
IB
What if we’re talking strictly from a per hour basis? I’m sure MBB is no walk in the park but I would assume that it’s closer to 70 hours a week where is IB is closer to 90-100
Acc1 I do think I’ll learn more in consulting but ib appeals to me as well but the hrs make it seem not worth it
Agree you’re looking at 300-350 in your first year out in IB. There’s no way you’re getting that with us.
But, the people I know in IB look like they’ve aged 20 years in the past 5. It’s such a tough lifestyle.
Very very unlikely you’ll last 10 years in either IB or MC. In fact over half people are gone in 3 years. So what matters are exit opps. FWIW I read an article a few years ago that said MBAs who started in IB ended up ahead in the long run compared to people who started in consulting because of better exit opps to hedge funds, PE, VC etc. Ex consultants were more likely to end up in corporate roles so over time their comp tended towards the comp of people who started in corporate roles post MBA.
Be a boss and go Bain for consulting before switching to Bain PE
Nope, it’s not - you gotta’ be good
Not talking about that only between MBB or IB
Still IB. What is it, something like 300-350 all in year 1? You'll still make more per hour, except your body will feel exponentially worse after 5 years.
Post MBA IB opps is generally Corp dev or management consulting...Corp dev pay is IMO not too bad, probably 200k all in comp if you leave banking after a 3 year stint.
Con1 are you sure it’s 300-350?I thought base right out of mba was around 120k and bonus was usually their salary, mayyybeee 1.5 x their salary
Base is higher. I don't have latest updated numbers, but I'm sure you can find it online. Basically a 150 base and 100% bonus gets you there...
Con1 you sure? I just checked a couple of resources including a 2018 article on poets and quants and ex ibankers on Quora which both are pretty accurate. You might be thinking of Goldman Sachs but gs is an outlier. Average seems to be 250k all in so it seems like the first few years mbb might actually be more on an hourly basis
Mck1 based on what resource? Can you share a link? I’m not seeing this and I’ve looked at multiple sources dated 2018
My first year AS1 banking friends were ~225-250. M&A a bit higher and Lev Fin a bit lower....but the question was in 10 years our and it’s a impossible question to answr
At 10 years — you’re either an MD in IBD or you have been pushed out and it was pr
Probably not to the buy-side. You most likely went in-house and the pay is lower. In consulting, you’re a partner or you’ve been pushed out too. Either way the attrition is very high.
