For the last 5 years, I’ve worked at an insurance defense firm and I have gained a ton of overall litigation experience. I have 1st chaired and second chaired over 17 cases. (Mostly auto and premises work) However, I’ve realized that I do not want to try cases anymore and don’t want to stay in insurance defense. I currently make $150,000.00 per year and I’m interested in switching areas of law while still making my same salary. What are some good areas of law to consider post insurance defense?

I feel like a transition to general commercial litigation would be doable. There would be a lot less courtroom appearance, I believe, than insurance defense. If you wanted to switch to something in the transactional realm, you’d be starting over and I doubt you could keep that salary.

What is an average salary for an entry level position in the transactional realm? Does my litigation experience help me at all to negotiate a higher starting salary?

In house somewhere! Focus on your risk management skills.

I moved to a firm with a more general practice from insurance defense. Still do a little insurance defense which gets me in the courtroom frequently but not dealing with it all the time. Other work is a good variety of plaintiffs’ civil rights work, transactional and some employer investigation defense work.

Consider in-house at an insurance company? They must have a role that tracks/supervises ID cases.

The amount of people, even attorneys, who can't separate out the policy merits of abortion from the issue of whether it is a constitutional right is disappointing. I consider myself pro-choice ---I believe states should allow it, that the federal government can pass a statute to guarantee it, and that FDA statutes and regulations will preempt any state trying to ban chemical abortions through FDA approved drugs. Dobbs at its core is a case about the Due Process Clause, not the policy of abortion
