Technical skills Demonstrates awareness/ business acumen for the client’s business in the context of the project Crazy attention to detail on written/visual client-facing work Asks clarifying questions Is “one face to the client” Is collaborative across workstreams and works well with all people Is concise in stand-ups & in front of client Does not wait for every detail to be explained- produces drafts or ideas and seeks feedback Knows how to use their network in the firm for answers or additional information

C1, yes! and more specifically, means that you don’t air team laundry or argue with a fellow consultant in front of the client or in meetings with the client present. In 90%+ of situations this behavior makes them very uncomfortable and diminishes your brand and the firm’s.

Critical thinking and emotional intelligence are the secret sauce of this world, it all flows from there. Critical thinking - the ability to imagine what a client will ask, put complex concepts into images and simple slides, come up with new ideas and fit them into existing concepts... it’s all about thinking ahead and thinking better. Emotional intelligence - understand others and how they want to be treated, and treat them that way. Communication should be clear, authentic, and personally targeted. All the typical things - attention to detail, work timeliness are important, but to me the level of competency of the two above things are 80% of things. Being hungry helps.

Always one step ahead.. anticipates what is required by you and the client.. proactive vs reactive. Asks good questions and gets shit done ✅

Agree with all of this. Would add - good Google skills... The number of people who don't look up terms to even see if it's a basic or well-known industry term confounds me. - you should try to get smarter than your managers and senior managers on something. It could be natural to your work stream (like you know the data better than they are because that's your role in the project, or reading any documents sent in particular detail), or it could be getting to know the clients products better than anyone else through research, etc. I'm always impressed when my staff and seniors grow a body of knowledge that is valuable for the project.

smart

Know what they want, upfront and take active steps to achieve it. I'm happy to adjust expectation depending on what they want out of their career, so long as they are committed to achieving it. Different people want different things at different stages of their life and that's completely fine by me, I'm there to support them. But I want to see their ability to take active steps to grow.

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

I just started at a new company 2 months ago with the expectation of having 3-4 people on my team. However, my team size will be increasing to 7. I don’t really want to rock the boat so early at my new job especially since I’m still in the “drinking from the firehose” phase, but this is going to be a significant increase in responsibility. We only have pay review in January of each year. Would it be crazy to ask about a raise later this month?
