For those in NYC, where do you all get your suits from? And for how much? I’m new to the city, (just a couple of months) and I don’t know where to buy good suits without having to shell out a bomb.

Tbh you don’t need a suit in most NY biglaw offices. Male or female?

Sounds crazy but I have gotten designer suits (Hickey Freeman, Armani, Hugo Boss, and even an isaia) off eBay for between $250 to $350. If you have one suit that fits you well take measurements of the shoulders, chest, waist, etc.) and match up to the listings. Unfortunately the ebay filters aren't great and you have to do some manual sorting. You will have to take to a tailor for at least some minor alterations (hem, maybe sleeves, etc.) but I have been able to get some great suits at a great price this way. Much better then the quality I would find at Jos A Bank.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. What is the optimum cost y’all suggest for spending on a second suit? I already have one and just need a spare. Something nice, but not too expensive lol

Hi, I’m a global trading analyst. I need advice since EOY reviews are coming up. I’ve grown so much in my role & have moved to doing senior duties. I’ve also been told by my manager that upper management is noticing my work. My question is how much is a decent raise & how do I know what is a bad raise? Can you negotiate them? I have been at my role for about a year and 4 months now graduated in 2021. I am not salary, I work hourly. We work crazy 10-12 hour days at times. Thanks!

PSA: Buy a house if you are able. I spent the first 5 years in big law annoyed and upset with many things but my life has gotten so much better since I bought a house. I now have a separate office to work from and actually like working from home. I no longer have loud neighbors I share a wall or ceiling/floor with. I have an extra room for my mother in law to stay in and visit my infant child (instead of taking him to her house for visits only once a month). Also no worry about rent hikes.

Corp/securities associate and lateraled to a 40-50 attorney firm earlier this year. I’m a non traditional candidate and considered a 3rd or 4th year and make $200k base. Waiting on raise/bonus info but can’t help but wonder if I could be making $100k more at a larger firm and working similar hours. I put a premium on the people I work with and have gotten a good rhythm here as well as built up a good rep so far. For reference I have billed avg. 180-200 hrs a month. Any insights?

Can we be honest for a second? No one has a clear policy for how we should be billing our time and no one wants to ask. I’ve heard perspectives ranging from, “a good faith estimate at the end of the week is sufficient” to “you need to have a timer going at all times and if you don’t turn it off when you pee, you’re committing an ethical violation”... also, “Bill anything that moves the deal forward” vs. “You can’t bill for collating documents. That’s not legal work.”

Can anyone share about how their firm handles origination? More specifically, how long do you have to work for a client that you didn’t personally bring in before you would start sharing in the origination? Current firm doesn’t have a policy setting forth metrics at which sharing would be required, so essentially, associates and less senior partners are at the more senior partners’ mercy. People have to actively decide to “give” a share in origination to those actually working the files.
