Having agency experience is a fantastic background for transitioning to in-house. It’s coveted. It shows you can think conceptually, strategically, and you can write in a brand’s voice. Don’t worry about metrics. When you bounce from your first in-house gig to the next, you can focus on how you helped lift key verticals in Q3, Blah Blah. For now, show how much you understand about storytelling and the value of great content. A piece of solid advice: tell them what you know about them, what you love specifically about their brand, why you want to work there, and what you bring to the table that they can’t live without. Be confident: your agency background is a real asset.
I agree with Dropbox. Though, I would add that they’re going to look for some signs that you’re going to play by the in-house rules. Generally speaking, a little more conservative, ok with spin, and able to learn brand. I’d also recommend approaching the interview differently. They’re much less conversational than agencies. Give specific examples in your responses. They’re mostly going to probe for some not so sexy things and each interviewer will likely be given specific subject matter to ask you about.
I joined an in house team and was hired by and ECD who was poached from the best agency in my market. It really is about looking at and meeting the team. Also ground floor in (well-funded)startup land can be great in terms of stock options, small teams full of talent, and that culture tends to value creative.
