For those of you that have been in bi or data science consulting for a while, how many projects are actually smooth/not a complete clusterf*ck or sh*tshow? I’ve been in ERP consulting cont.

For a second there i was going to say bi visibility day was a few weeks ago... 🏳️‍🌈

It helps when the client actually appreciates the complexity of what they’re trying to do. I’ve had some projects go smooth, some just all over the place - id say 50/50. Data science is harder than people think for implementation and easier than people realize for preliminary assessments

If it was easy, the client would do it themselves !

I'm with TA1. Clients wouldn't call us if these problems were easy. They'd do it in house or hire a staff aug contractor. They hire us because they believe the cost premium is justified by our ability to execute.

With enterprise clients for 7 yrs now and looking back, I don’t think I’ve ever had a good project. Is this just the nature of consulting or possibly just more common with ERP since there seem to be so many moving parts, workstreams, etc

D1 what were some of the main problems you encountered on your bad projects? And how long have you been doing this for?

In general, I think people understate the interpersonal aspect of making projects not shit shows. A lot comes down to how your team works, how your client is, and what your relationship with the client is like.

I would say that very few of my projects have been shit shows, but we have a lot of autonomy from our client and a 30-year relationship doing this work with them which has built a lot of trust. My client is also shockingly good at knowing when they don’t know something, and is primarily made up of scientists who understand that things don’t always go according to plan.

My team works well together and underpitches our expected delivery so that if/when we fall behind it’s not a big deal (I know people who pitch the dream and then only deliver 1/3 and they tend to look very bad).

I think one or two. It comes down to how templated the work is. The more “discovery” type work, the more messed up it is. In other words anytime somebody can’t say “I’ve done exactly this thing before successfully”. I’ve only seen a data conversion and an SAP BI install be completely successful

All interesting answers thus far. Keep them coming

Ta1 not necessarily true. sometimes it’s not so easy to find enough people with certain skill set because consulting firms have most of them, hence NetSuite or Hybris. Not so hard to do an internal implementation but almost impossible to hire up an internal team large enough without relying on external resources because it’s so damn hard to find the talent

DDOP, that’s part of what makes it hard! Either expertise or manpower, which keeps the consulting train rolling!

I’ve completed online certification courses, I’ve done a ton of self study of other coaching content and I believe you can still provide value and help to someone even if you haven’t (cont)

Hey 🐠, would appreciate your input. I’ve found myself more on the data engineering side of work (Snowflake builds, ETLs, etc.). This work is important and sells well, but I want to move towards more “analytics” and influencing business decision-making through data.
