I am 38 and only have 200k in 401k. I started late and made some bad investments and lost about 150k in options in 2021.Is there any hope left for me for FIRE? Now I am doing DCA to VTSAX but markets seem all time high. Looking to buy investment property but feels like I am buying on top of the cycle. Any suggestions on path forward?

Roll everything to one IRA / Roth IRA unless left before 59 1/2 (but after year you turn 55), then should keep money separate because of 401k special rules for taking withdrawals.
But yeah, after 60, everything in one place, automatic withdrawal of your cash position (you should not have your paymens for the year invested).
If multiple sources, popular order of withdraw is:
- Brokerage
- Traditional 401k/IRA
- ROTH

I'm still a bit out depending on the next year or two goes (further career progression or coast) but I use a modified version of the Mad Fientist's Financial Independence Spreadsheet and a retirement account tracker I made myself.
I also use personal capital to aggregate accounts and make filling out the FI spreadsheet monthly only take a few minutes.
My retirement tracker I do annually. I have columns for each type of retirement account, project future contributions and balances (with formulas so I can easily change variables like rate of return or when I stop contributions). I also put in future income streams like pension and ss. I have another column that shows what a 4% withdrawal rate starting at that age would look like. I eventually will build on it to include tax impact and RMDs but it works for me for now.
I don't know that it really matters how many of each account you have as long as you can keep track of them and aren't paying extra fees. I plan to simplify my bank and brokerage accounts but as of now only have one Roth IRA, one 401k account, one HSA, and one pension.
Sorry about all the typos folks 😂

I am early retired and moved everything to one institution to reduce complexity (Merrill Lynch). I have several accounts within my portfolio at ML for me, my wife and our various retirement vehicles. I’ll do ROTH conversions and get rid of the traditional IRA’s when the taxes make sense.

Very similar… I am using some advanced modeling to reduce lifetime taxes and Medicare costs by being deliberate when I withdraw from taxable, Roth or traditional IRA accounts
