Working Moms

For those of you that were pregnant and worked in biglaw, did you ever feel like you just couldn’t do the hours and being pregnant at the same time? I find myself unmotivated by work, irritated by my coworkers and planning when to leave at least once a week. My job has a great maternity policy so it makes sense to just ride it out, but as an ambitious woman, I am wondering whether there is something wrong with me and am worried about my mental health...

Yes. This was about 20 years ago, but I remember when I was 7 months pregnant telling my senior partner that because I was having some back pain I was going to cut my hours back to 50 a week. I can still remember the look on his face. And after a long silence, he said “you could have timed this pregnancy a lot better - hope you’ll remember that the next time”. No maternity leave is worth that kind of pressure. I’d tell them what you need to function and forget it if they aren’t willing to work with you. There are lots of firms who will, trust me.

Left mid size insurance defense firm when my daughter was 9 and 1/2 months old. I loved the people I worked with in my office and the leave policy was great but when I got back I found that I had my job, my kid, my marriage and my health... only 2 of those things were getting enough attention at 185 hours/month in professional liability. Made the switch to a firm that requires 160/month and life is way better.

There is nothing wrong with you. I got out of Big Law and work in house and I felt this way one hundred percent while I was pregnant with my son. It’s worth it to ride it out and have the paid maternity leave and in my case, I was happy I did and motivated to go back to work after a few months of leave.

I feel exactly the same. I’m only sticking it out for the great maternity leave.

I’m “high risk” (36 years old), have a bilobed placenta (placenta separated into two near equal- sized lobes) but baby is healthy and docs have expressed no concerns. Yet they want to schedule an induction at 40 weeks- I’m 39 weeks now. I have a doc appointment tomorrow but just wondering if this would be considered a medical reason for an induction. I’ve had no signs of labor so thinking, should I just schedule it?... 🤔
