For those of you who are currently working at or have worked in the past in Deloitte, McKinsey, etc - What is it like working at the big 4 consultancy as a UX designer? Do you think you are able to get strong portfolios out of the work? Do you think it would help you career? Asking as someone considering to move from in-house to a consultancy.

The two firms you mention are VASTLY different in the UX work you'd do there.

Can you get strong portfolios? It depends - what are you trying to show with your work?

Deloitte (or Big 4) work could range from agency oriented stuff (Deloitte Studio) to product/platforms type stuff (Deloitte Digital). The odds are high that design work done for a Big 4 or an Accenture sees the light of day and gets built.

McKinsey, Bain, BCG -- these firms will almost never work on B2C products, and a lot of design work will be very speculative or illustrative--design work sold as a part of strategy tends to just be Figma prototype stuff. Clients rarely will pay McK/Bcg/Bain to build it both due to resources and pricing constraints.

I've worked at major agencies and consultancies in design strategy/research/XD - it all just depends what kind of designer you are and what you want to develop/showcase. What are they @OP?

Studios are organizationally part of Deloitte Digital, and our UXers sit in the Studios.

GPS has their own studio because we split commercial from public sector across the firm.

There are other pockets of designers around, but in terms of scale & center of gravity, the above holds. Certainly in terms of the kind of work OP is interested in.

I work for Deloitte on the GPS side. Most projects require I sign NDAs, so not great for building a portfolio. But the fact you work for one of the big 4 is a huge career boost. I am constantly getting contacting by recruiters trying to poach me. Also based on your comments, you are trying to get hired at Deloitte Studio (the commercial side). They are amazing to work for and have some really great projects, big clients. Good luck!

I don't like my job, the responsibilities and tasks aren't right for me or my lifestyle.

Key positives for my current employer are pay and security. But my new role within the company isn't working for me, and ultimately I don't think it is for the company either.

A much much smaller (20 people) company offered me a role.

With the global economic situation as is, is it worth the risk to change to a job I know i'd like more with less pay, and potentially less job security?

Has anyone found roles in Big 4 or industry that allowed more work life balance when their kids were young without damaging future career trajectory? I'm a partner with young kids and feel like I'm missing out on too much of their lives. Wishful, but my dream job would have a lighter workload in terms of time and pressure for the next ~5 years, but not set me back too much (or at all) when the kids are older and tired of me in a few years and I'm ready to be back at work full force.
