I love this so much!
7 years married, and I wish we’d spent more. We paid for it ourselves. Our guest list was about 150, but we had to cut people out to get to that number to stay on budget. We also cut out a videographer and chose a cheaper photographer. I wish I’d spent a little more and got everything we wanted and invited everyone. I thought I’d remember forever to the penny how much the wedding cost since I was playing for most of it, but I don’t at all.
It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event, if it doesn’t put you in a stressful financial place, spend what you need to.
For context, we got married in a rural place, so the whole wedding cost somewhere around $15k
dont skimp on the photographer. These memories are so precious and having good photos to look back on is a blessing
The thing that matters the most is that you’re marrying the right person. Because let me tell you, I had the best fucking wedding ever. I couldn’t top it. And my husband ended up cheating on me for years and we got divorced. So the #1 thing you should absolutely prioritize is.... are you both going to have the right mindset and the chances to intimately make your promises to each other?
But the things I cared about were great music and loving my dress. That’s all that matters :-)
Mattered: Venue, photographer, food, alcohol, music
Didnt Matter: Place settings, the cake, the invitations, the flowers, videographer
Married long time ago and wish we were more careful . For one , Friday vs Saturday was a huge diffence in price . Keep in mind that you want to enjoy the day and don’t need all these little things to please people . That extra fish dish etc that just costs money
15 years together. We married in private and invited 50 close friends / family for a dinner. Norms of this crazy spending / all night party stuff of tradition.
Indian wedding, mid size (400+ guests). Total was 35-40k. Wish we would have eloped or done a small ceremony with close friends and family and used the money on a down payment for a house or pay off debt.
Pro
We did it just outside of Chicago.
Costco cake was a great decision. Saved a ton of money, cake tasted great and no one gave a damn because we didn’t do the ceremonial cake cutting stuff (also a good decisions).
