I've been a strategist for nearly 30 years -- there are only 2 success factors... you really know what you are talking about and you can build strong relationships with other people... especially client services and creative directors. Most 'shit' strategists can do neither... it is amplified if you're patronising, inflexable and like the sound of your own voice.
I think there’s a tendency for some strategists to lean more towards the account side, and act as judges of the work instead of creative partners that can help round out ideas. I like strategists who are there throughout the whole creative process as sources of inspiration and as a go to for any questions, rather than just at the beginning and the end.
I worked somewhere where many of the strategists essentially dictated creative and nit picked, acted like CDs essentially. How you collaborate and discuss the work is everything.
